How are things? 1st time posting in here.

I've a Mac Pro.. Running Tiger.

I've seen around that you can install SL without even having Leopard.. or more importantly, buying the expensive "Box Set" that Apple are recommending to Tiger users.

So.. Tiger users can upgrade for €29-ish.

Not exactly correct.. but possible.

The SL "Retail" Leopard upgrade is supposed to be stand alone - so you can do an install on a blank drive.. or even straight over Tiger.

Just wondering if anyone here has upgraded to Snow Leopard in this way from Tiger.. and if so, what your experiences are / have been?

Plenty on the net from Americans.. But I'd like to get a few opinons from people that speak the same version of English as myself  ;) :pac:

    Cheers,

    J

SL's installation is a little different from previous ones. Technically it doesn't really install "over" the previous OS. It actually replaces it and migrates most things over. i.e. you are getting a new system folder. So it is more akin to the old "archive and install" option, minus the "archive" bit (if that makes any sense). Therefore, whether you are upgrading from Tiger or Leopard, it shouldn't really make any difference.

That probably doesn't really answer your question though. :o

Nah.. Thats cool Mate.. Any sort of discussion usually helps! :)

SO.. It replaces / creates a new folder etc.. Will anything vital be left out because it is expecting to install over Leopard?

I've seen it written that its stand alone.. But obviously I'm wondering / concerned I'll be left without a certain bit of the OS that was intended to be carried over in the upgrade.

I only use my Mac for Music Production.. Dont really mind about the possibility of losing any of the Apple iLife type stuff.

I migrated from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

First a normal upgrade install. I thought it was a little bit slower than it should be afterward so I did a clean install and moved my stuff over manually.

Was much more happy with the system after that.

    ICN,

Don't worry, you won't lose anything. My point was it's not really a traditional "upgrade", so you don't need to be concerned about it expecting certain stuff to already be there. The €30 disc will work the same as the Box Set disc. You'll be fine.

You should still have a backup though.

    Sound as Mate.

I upgraded an older MacBook from Tiger directly to Snow Leopard for someone - it works perfectly fine, no functional problems at all doing it that way and no different from upgrading from Leopard either. There is of course the issue that this breaks Apple's EULA but it won't cause you any technical problems so you have nothing to worry about in that regard...
