Could the boot lock have been replaced by one with a different key?
I don't know about the E36 but is there a button in the cabin to open the boot? (there is on later the E39 & E46)

ho there is no button on inside of car to open,i didnt get a key for boot when i got the car it only opend via the key fob used to have to do it a few times then it would open but dusnt open atall now i think maybe with banging it all the time something inside may have broken or disconnected,i have tried going in from the back seat but cant find any bolts etc to remove otherwise the are sucured tight,i have been told if you drill a small hole above number plate you can gain access then but dont no where to drill.if you any more ideas would be very gratful.tnx

Have you tried spraying wd40 into the lock and on the key, then slide key in and out of lock a few times then gently wriggle it and see if it frees the lock.
Had the same problem on a car before and it happened because the fob was always used to open the boot, so the lock got stiff as no key had ever been put into it.
Took me 10 minutes to free my lock, hope it works for you.

This is a common problem with the E36. Do your rear seats fold?
