Out Of Warrenty - Problems With Dell

My Dell laptop is bloody crap. Had it just over a year and didn't use it for most of it. Now that I have it repaired from a spillage it is terribly slow. Really really bad. Especially on the net. It freezes up when I click a link. Is there any sites you recommend for a diagnostic? I refuse to give any more money to Dell. Going to go up north and buy a new and different one when I can afford it. In the meantime, any suggestions?

If nothing important is on it why not try re-instal the operating system or use a live cd to see if that helps? If not could some of the ram have been fried and they just removed it and didnt replace it?

I might get an external hard drive and put my stuff onto that, then reinstall the software. Don't know if they touched the ram, they repaclaced the motherboard only.

Okay, this is a cardinal rule of interlife, you do not trust sites to run diagnostics on your machine.

Theres maybe, 5 exceptions. in The WoRLD. Like Microsoft. And 3dMark. And Systemrequirementslab. None of which really have to do with diagnosing problems.

Sites like Finallyfast.com are scams Scams SCAMS!!! scams.

I bet you payed a lot of money to replaced that motherboard too. Which is a shame. If it is a motherboard problem (doubtful) that is warranted another year afaik, if you paid for its replacement. But this is probably something else.

could be more than one thing if you spilled a load of crap onto it sounds like your disk is bogey, run the dell diags and see if anything fails

Slowing down on the net doesnt really sound like a hardware problem to be honest. Usually a hardware problem would be black/white rather than slow things down. Except maybe the hard-drive, I guess that could be damaged from a spillage, it would be a cheap fix if it was though.

Have you got a good antivirus suite? The first thing i'd do is just give it a full virus scan.

And the thing i'd do before the first thing is definitely back everything important up, onto an external drive, or any other method you have (DVDs etc).

I had Norton but that ran out. I now use AVG, but I don't think it is great. Are there any other virus scans you recommend?

It's not just the net that is slow, it takes a while to turn on and start up.

AVG should be fine. Make sure Norton is gone from your system if you are using AVG now. Give it a full virus scan of the whole disc(s) and see if anything shows up.

After that, you could also try:
-Defragment the hard-drive (just right click the C: drive in 'My Computer' and you'll find the defrag option under tools)
-Disk-check the hard-drive (full check including surface scan.) You'll find this in the same place as the defrag. Takes a good while to do.
-Clean the registry and startup list using CCleaner (free application Link). You don't need to take everything out of the startup list, but theres some things like Adobe updaters etc that will just start-up every time and hog your resources. Check back if youre not sure what is safe to do.
