UCC Boards Beers - now with less poll!

I'm putting this thread up to see what interest (if any) there is on having a meet-up of UCC boardsies in a local establishment in the next few weeks. All are welcome to give their input as to what pub and date would suit best. If we get sufficient numbers (25+ people), i'm sure there's a likelihood of free finger food being provided on the nite. Its a good opportunity for us as a group to get to know each other and hopefully form new friendships out of it.

I myself would favour the Thirsty Scholar (Art McBrides to you first years) on Western Road. A very student friendly pub with good beers on tap and a lively atmosphere.

The floor is open ladies and gents for your suggestions.....

I like Art McBrides but I am constantly irked by their prices. They claim to be a student friendly bar, but their cheapest pint is Beamish at €3,70??

Old bar is my suggestion, not too loud, great prices, and a cool atmosphere. If people are intent on going somewhere off campus, then Box Foxes on a non class party night out is cool, it's a nice bar + does a few cool drink deals.

Anywhere that does'nt have drinks deals should be ruled out, and anywhere where a huge crowd/insane noise (Preachers, you know who you are), should also be ruled out IMO.

You don't meet new people by trying to scream at them over the new Kings of Leon single.

    That's my 2 euros. :P

I approve completely of this thread, however...

    (1) I hate people from Limerick. Whenever I meet/see one, I want to beat them with my hurley. (Grenache, I'm justing trying to defend you mate).

    (2) I hate people from Dubin/Tipperary/Kilkenny/Waterford - I can smell you from miles out, and am likely to beat you with my tiny hurley that I keep stashed in my cool hipster bag.

...so yeah, Grenache and non-Cork people, watch youself. :pac:

Good stuff! I wouldn't be a fan of the Old Bar myself although the prices there are very reasonable. If we were to stay on campus i would be leaning more towards the New Bar.

*@ Nova, if you want really cheap Beamish, go to Callanans on Georges Quay, beside Sober Lane. They do it for E3 a pint!! :) Pity its an old man's bar.

*@ Orizio - you only hate Limerick City people! Us West Limericians are a different breed of folk altogether! Its not possible to dislike us :D

No, and they dont allow tiny manhoods either :pac: Sure what would you be wanting with a hurley for anyway Orizio, dont ye normally go on strike at this time of year? :D

I forgot to add my undying hatred for Kerry people. Who cares if you can kick a round ball round an area of grass really quickly? Huh?

Eh Grenache, how do you hold a hurley properly? Come on now, I'm sure someone on County Limerick knows...don't they?

How many All-Irelands have ye won again, I keep losing count after two...

It depends which competition you're referring to. We hold several All Ireland Set Dancing Medals ;)
As for the hurley, hold it like you're gonna use it. I hear Cork are getting stuck for players lately after a few retirements, ye might have to borrow a few of the camogie team. Keep the hurley with you man, Denis Walsh might be calling on you yet :pac:

I'm up for this, if you all promise not to be too weird ;). I'll force 1-2 of my mates who are members to come down too.

Also +1 for the old bar ! S'cheap ! Also I don't have a clue where the other place is. But mostly for the cheapness and the fact that it is ~50m from my house ! ;)

    + 1 for Old bar.

Cider tends to taste a lot like water in the Thirsty Scholar... -_-

The Old Bar has a good ambience to it, but i always find it cold in there. E2.75 is great, but unfortunately Fosters is possibly the worst lager ever brewed. So bad even the Australians hate it!

How much are they for Budvar and the like in there?

Think its like E3 for a pint of Bavaria, still very cheap! I don't know the prices of the others coz I'm a cheapo when it comes to beer :o

hmm, good idea methinks! I'm not that mad on the old bar idea though, coz feeling like a big pack of nerdy internet people in the middle of college might make it more awkward...

I go there quite regularly (in fact, I'm going there tonight!), and while it feels like an old mans bar, some of the hottest girls ever to set foot in Cork can be seen sipping on half pints of Murphys in there on a nightly basis. :D

Not a good place for a meetup though.

Old Oak is another cool place which is always good for a large group of people meeting IMO.

Well nobody bats an eyelid when the WARPS and Netsoc do anything, so I think we should be ok. :)

Bavaria is 2.75 a pint in the old bar and is the staple of my mid-day drinking.

A tenner for a pitcher of bulmers/hoegarden in the new bar is good too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 614 ✭✭✭blankblank

How much does a bulmers cost in the old bar???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭samf

    The New Bar
Bulmers is 3.75 in the old bar, and pitchers are a tenner. In short, the old bar have some of the cheapest damn pints around.

A college girl that likes beer? Fascinating! Thought all the girlies in UCC went for vodka. I dont think anyone here is from Limerick City so no need to worry bout knives :D

@ electro bitch: I would imagine sometime in the next 2-3 weeks, a Tues or Wed nite would probably be best. If Orizio could maybe add the poll to see which nite/location suits best....
