overtime

    On my contract my working hours are 8 - 5 and loads of evening i've stayed on, there is no overtime or time-in lieu either, my boss said now that he expects more of this and if i don't like it i can go! i'm only working here for little over a year! is this legal! in my contract it says about overtime on saturday and sundays but nothing about evening, but it does say that my hours are 8-5 Mon to Friday!!

    Most contracts have a section stating that you may occassionally be asked to work a reasonable number of hours past the core working hours.

    You are not required to work on past your normal working hours on a regular basis, and your boss cannot fire you for refusing to do so.

    My understanding is that hourly paid employees are not expected to go beyond the usual 39 hours, whereas salaried employees are expected to spend the time necessary to get the job done (within reason).

    Depends really. Hourly-paid employees sometimes work on a rota - what they get paid that week depends on how many hours they were rostered on for and any hours worked above the roster aren't paid.

    It all depends on the contract. I'm salaried but also entitled to overtime for any hours worked above the normal weekly hours.

    see i'm rightly confused about this, i'm on contract and salary basis, but i come in early and have often worked late, but i think they expect this every evening as there is one girl here that does it, my contract is up in Dec, so do i just do it for the sake of keeping a job, i think i'm taken for a ride.

    TBH if i were you i would keep doing it untill your contract gets renewed, then maybe scale back in the new year.
