Why can the marathon not be on a Sunday

Why can the Dublin marathon not be on a Sunday like every other major city marathon. Just think how many extra overseas runners would travel as they would not have to take an extra days holiday. It would also suit those traveling from outside Dublin. For those of us who had to work on the Tuesday, just think how much better we would have felt waking up on Monday to a day off. Anyone know why it is on the Monday and why we cannot have it on the Sunday?

Not being smart but surely this would be a question better directed to the organisers?

for the same reason that you want to have it on a sunday, except they want to keep the riff raff out not encourage it in, Pro athletes dont have to work on Tuesdays:p

I agree but its probably down to the city traders as they would lose too much business as people not involved would stay away from town on the day. most of them close on bank hol anyway.

yup, it's easier and cheaper to close down a city when its pretty much closed down already (bank holiday)

that's my opinion too, it's all about money. to be honest, the council don't give a hoot about marathon runners so they are way down the pecking order.
It would be so much handier to have it on Sunday alright.
It's the same situation for the Cork marathon no doubt.

If there is one thing that I hate about DCT its that its on a Monday.

Totally agree with OP. Sunday would attract so many more people to the event.

I took a days holiday on Tuesday, my annual leave day the day after marathons is one of the reasons I love running them so much, it's great to sit on your arse in front of the TV all day and know you deserve to be there. :D

The Boston marathon...the world's oldest (and most prestiguous?)...is always held on a Monday

(so was the Cork marathon as well come to think of it, and Belfast is a bank holiday Monday marathon as well)

    .

If myself and my friends didn't have work the next day we'd have hit the eateries, pubs and probaly nightclubs of the city instead of just going home. I imagine a lot of the foreign visitors don't spend as much as they might do due to travelling home on the monday or tuesday.

I HATE that it's on the Monday!!

I don't think its down to city traders. Hasn't it always fallen on the Monday? This would mean it was on a Monday back when it was probably considered a sin to even think about opening a business on a Sunday in Ireland!

At this stage its just the day its set as I'd imagine. It's a shame though as with the prices people in the UK can get a flight to Ireland now a days I'd imagine you'd get far more coming over for a weekend and flying home afterwards if it was on a Sunday. A Monday marathon suits people who are coming for a holiday rather than a weekend.

Ah yes - but ask anyone in Boston when the marathon is on and they know when Marathon Monday is. The average man in the street in Dublin wouldn't know that the marathon is on the October bank holiday Monday.

Perhaps the religious significance of Sunday in Ireland has a lot to do with it... I'm all for Mondays - in fact I'll particularly fond of additional bank holidays for private sector workers (just kidding :D)

Additionally could DCM actually accomodate more people? I mean its full and its running well - why make it bigger, and how big... 25,000 ?
