Dell Inspiron 2200 Problem

Hi I have a Dell Inspiron 2200, which was bought back in 2005. It has given me no trouble as of yet except for this. The problem is that when I plug out the Laptop from the main power socket, the icon that indicates the power source (located on the bottom write hand side of the screen near the time indicator )does not change to the battery icon to indicate that it is now using battery power. Also a yellow light pops up on the computer when i plug it out from the mains, (a yellow light normally indicates a low battery) and the same yellow light also flashes when I plug the laptop back into the mains after a while (5 mins). If the laptop was plugged out for a few minutes and then I plugged it back in again there should be a green light on the laptop to indicate that it is charging, this is now not occurring. Instead no light occurs. After a while the yellow light starts flashing.

Its very unusual and havent seen this before.

Anyone know whats up with the laptop?

It sounds like the battery is dead.
EDIT: By that i mean that you need a new battery, and not that you've just run out...

If that was the way, how is it that when I plug out the mains, the battery works? There was very little life left in the battery anyway (approx. 10 mins) before this problem occurred. By plugging it in it appears to be charging eventhough there is nothing to indicate that it is. (i.e no green light).

Batteries do weird things at the end of life. I know my Dell 6400 thinks it has no battery connected when there is one. And it will last a few minutes away from the plug.
