Yes i know it was made to get trucks out of city centre..

But seriously, why not let the cars use it too. Perhaps still tolling (€4 each maybe??) I think its a waste having it just for trucks. Shoot me down if you must but thats just my opinion

I'm not a truck driver, I've used the tunnel once during the day.
There are a lot of idiots that can't drive on the road full stop, the last place they need to be is in a tunnel that was designed and built to remove trucks out of the city.
It would spend more time closed due to unwanted accidents.

Of course it's not only for trucks.

Cars are allowed, and are tolled because it is, as you say, intended for lorries.

Redundant capacity has a value all of its own.

If it was regularly congested, trucks would start to not use it, defeating its origenal purpose.

...not to mention the large number of buses - I use that tunnel daily (on the 101x) and the last thing I would want to see is cars clogging it up. The DPT is probably the only urban motorway in Europe that actually works - that is of course, because the cars are discouraged from using it!

The Dublin City Council don't get everything right, but they certainly seem to get some things right - DPT use, College Green, Cycle Tracks (not sure avout the climate here though) etc. Also, they've remarked a portion of the North Circular Road (S2 with wide cycle lanes) - have been on it a couple of times (101 bus) and it seems to work very well - it used to be a traffic hell hole around the Dorset St intersection. Came in this morning on the 101 through Drumcondra - very little delay - the DCC surely have to be good for something regarding transport. However, they do have to get real regarding those awful S3 bus corridors like the Navan Road - the Drumcondra Road is mostly S4 which is why it works much better!

    Regards!

Adequate airflow only happens in tunnels if traffic is moving. Not just the port tunnel, any tunnel. The port tunnel opens out onto a pretty congested part of the city, unless the tunnel traffic is going into the port, so the amount of cars using it has to be severely restricted. They cannot have traffic coming out of the tunnel into a traffic jam at the east link/east wall, otherwise it would back up into the tunnel and cause major problems.
