I think bus is the only real option - takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to reach central Stockholm I believe

I went to stockholm in March 2008. We stayed in a subarb called haninge, which was 20 mins on the train from central Stockholm. We got better value not being in the centre and it didn't bother us having to get the train but that's not for everyone..

It was around -4 when we were there and that was pretty difficult to be walking around in.

We really enjoyed walking around the old town, Gamla Stan and going to the palace and the Nobel museum. We took a tram to Djurgarden, but you could walk it. There's the outdoor museum there and a regular museum and a boat museum.

We were absoloutely frozen in the outdoor museum, so I don't think that should be top of your list of things to do!

We had no idea of the nightlife so ended up going to the cinema twice as all the films were shown in english.

I adored Stockholm and would love to go back again but in the summertime!

Went to Oslo in August and I prefered Stockholm.

Hope that helps, and if you have anymore qs? then ask away

That is great help! We will be going over around the 11th of december so i presume that it will be cold so, bring my gloves and hat so!! I have always wanted to travel more around europe so thats why stockholm is the place we are going! Is stoclkholm easy to get around because it looks like its pretty big? also, have u any idea of where the best place is to book a hotel? we would like to be pretty central.

I think you should prepare yourselves for the coldest weather you have ever experienced :P Waterproof & lined boots, gloves & hats are essential. Maybe take a wee trip to a camping shop for the gloves and hats before you leave.

Central stockholm is very walkable, but they do have an underground so getting to grips with that when you arrive would be a good idea. All the newsagents/ 7-11's sell train tickets which is handy because the ticket machines are in Swedish. We got a 3 day train ticket and it was well worth the money..

If you are researching things to do in Stockholm, you're bound to come across the Stockholm card for tourists. It equals travel on the trains/buses/trams & entry into lots of museums. We didn't buy it in Stockholm but I used the Oslo equivilant during the summer and it saved us some money.

Being central is all well and good, but remember the transport system is pretty much flawless over there. To me, travelling 10-15 mins on a train every day wouldn't be a big deal. And especially if it saves you money.

I always book my hotels through hotels.com because i've had some great deals off them. Its hard to recommend a hotel without knowing how much you're willing to spend. If you want to post your budget per room per night, I'll see if I can find something.

I was on 1800hotels and seen a great hotel called "Scandic norra bantorget ". Its approx 380 for 4 nights in a 4 star hotel so that aint too bad like for a double room and its situated on the heart of stolkholm i think...
Havent booked anything yet but will have too before its too late i suppose!

when i was in new york last summer, it was handy having the weekly subway card so probably to the same with the metro they have in stolkholm.
