UPC HD Digital+ : Almost perfect

I must say, I’m loving the new UPC HD. The picture quality is simply stunning – even found myself watching under 17’s football on Eurosport HD and I normally have to be bribed to stay in the room when soccer is on. It’s an unbelievable difference and we could even see moths and flies buzzing around the pitch near the players. Quite literally, I was watching two flies walking up a screen ;)

I’ve been fiddling around with the different settings and can confirm that 1080i provides a marginally better picture than 720 but that leaving it on 1080i causes problems when you turn the box on. I don’t know what the problem is but the HDMI connection won’t pick up the signal from the box if the channel is not one of the HD ones (telly is a Sony Bravia Picture Frame 32” – about a year old). Anyway, 1080i was too much hassle for not very much so I’ve left the setting at 720. Leaving it on auto is a disaster as it switches from 1080i, to 720, to 576 depending on the channel and that was really annoying. However, leaving it at 720 still provides stunning picture quality. Still can’t believe we’re able to see things so clearly without noise or pixelling. It’s fantastic.

I am a bit bummed about two things though. First, is the loss of the analogue service – I know but let me explain. The telly was capable of picking up a few channels on its digital setting, for example; RTE 1, Setanta, Comedy, Living. We didn’t need the STB for this. It could be recording two things at once and we’d still have a few digital channels, all the analogue ones plus all the radio stations. That’s what I really miss. I know you can get the radio through the STB but I preferred it the other way and there was a better programme guide. Think it must be native to the Sony telly but it was great. On this new HD STB, there is only a port in for the co-ax cable and no port out to connect to the TV. Think we’ll have to get a splitter and hope that it works.

Second, the HD box won’t work with the Elgato video capture I had set up. At least, it won’t work if the HDMI cable is plugged in. We have to disconnect that and then the computer can pick the video signal up from the HD box. It can get an audio signal but no video for some reason. I have a sneaking suspicion that if a Scart lead was connected to a DVR from the HD box, it wouldn’t work either – at least, not until the HDMI cable is disconnected. Then it works. Am really puzzled as to why this is.

But otherwise, I love it. It's what all the HD tellys were made for.

bronn can you tell me which package you have and what is available in HD? The UPC site is somewhat vague on this. (http://www.upc.ie/television/)

Isn't that tournament upscaled rather than high definition?

    Hi Guys,

I'm on HD+ Max Pack as well ..

Has anyone else noticed a few extra Kids channels on the Max pack that we didn't used to have ? In fact I though that they were a separate subscription ..

Its Keeping my kids happy anyway ..

Edit : I just checked on UPC website and I see that the extra channels that I noticed have now been added to the MaX Pack :
Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney .... Unfortunately we don't get Disney HD , but I suppose that we shouldn't complain ...

Yesterday they told me HD was not available in my area, but I got cut off so today I rang again and they said that it is. I should be getting my HD box in about a week and if it works, I won't complain, but I'll be gutted if it doesn't. I ordered the self install pack. What do you do with the old box?

Interesting that you can get that kind of clarity from an upscaled picture.

Is there any prospect of them getting ITV/C4 HD?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

There is hardly ever anything on ITVHD and I would think it is unlikely.

    What self-install pack r u talking abt?

I'm so tempted to upgrade two of our PVR boxes but that's gonna sting us with 60 euros installation fees each!

When I rang they told me that I was self install capable (their exact words). I thought that was very nice of them to notice, so I said sure send me the pack and I'll keep my €30, thank you very much. I rang them, what was it Friday, and I got the box Tuesday morning and got it up and running Tuesday afternoon. I even made a little video about it, but it turned out kind of crappy, but I might upload it anyway just for the craic.

And the verdict: [borat accent] I like ;)

Was just on the phone with a UPC sales guy. Yeah there's a self-install pack which would cost me being an existing customer for €60 per HD box.

He said that if I could wait, there will be some price reductions and more additions to the HD channels as soon as this Christmas/New Year but he won't confirm anything.

With UPC HD+ Digital, do any Wireless Video Senders work with it?

None that I am aware of - I would doubt that any wireless carrier (unless you are going to spend big money) can maintain the HD signal quality

Oh yea, there is a cost involved even with the self install pack, but I didn't care about the cost that much really :) I should probably keep a close eye on the bill next month as NTL have been know to have some very dodgy accounting practices.

But financial things aside, this box is well work the money. In fairness the actual HD cannels are very limited (only 4 or 5) but I absolutely love the detail and very importantly a lot of the other channels look sooooooooooo much better than on the old box. Sometimes I find myself guessing if they're HD or not. I have a 2.5 year old 32" Sony midrange LCD TV and it just looks beautiful. Finally the future has arrived ;)

Yes it’s that good! If you can, you should just get it and don’t worry too much about the cost ;)

As an existing digital+ customer, they're sticking to quoting a €90 fee for me. No exception, no negotiation. Not likely.

    I'm Mikey23's missus.

When I rang the dude said that it was €90 because we were on Digital+ now, had we been on Analogue it would have been €60, asked about ordering online and he said no, only analogue get the €60 "deal". He did stutter and stammer a bit and used the old "I don't make the rules" chestnut which leads me to believe that he mightn't have been fully trained up or whatever, so going to see what happens when I fill in the online form.

I've had this with my darling UPC before, you ring a few times, get a few different agents and each will tell you something different. Methinks they may have a staff turnover problem.

I would love nothing more than to move to Sky, however we're very happy with our UPC broadband and it's the best value around, bringing in the cost of the landline you need for Sky, we'd be hammered. :(

Our Plus Box at the moment is showing all the signs of approaching death very soon so we're fairly screwed.

    .

You don't need a landline for Sky - there is an additional installation charge but its <€50 from memory.

You could still keep your UPC broadband - there is an additional charges €6+ a month again from memory - details hard to find sometimes on UPC.ie !!

They used to charge for the DVR install, then that became free for a while.

You can get away with only HDMI connection right? I'm plugging into a monitor so no SCART connection.
Assuming the box doesn't come with the HDMI cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 174 ✭✭surf board

HD box has scart & HDMI.

    Normal DVR only has scart.

One HDMI cable per HD box.

Funny how it say on UPC's site that they'll install your HD box within a week. Prob true, as not that many people can actually avail of it yet!! Ah, ya gotta love 'em

I got upc hd too and i am truly amazed at the picture. The up scaling on the sd channels is superb. The hd and audio are excellent too.The box needs to be reset every now and again but still i am happy with it.Just wondering if sky has up scaling and is the picture any better or the same?

Yesterday my father rang up to upgrade to the HD +, without asking were he lived the UPC girl said 'Oh were not doing HD yet" lol?
So told him to take the standard DVR.

So i when i was over with my dad i told hom to ring up and tell them that it is availible, after taking his address he said it was not available, to which i replied it is, says so on the upc site and Raheny has always been one of the 1st areas to get any UPC product.

Sure enough he checked on a "Different system" to which we were told it is available, and how it only updated now lol.

So after telling them what they have to offer it is now ordered and should be setup during the week.

Didnt for me! They made a "mistake". Needless to say I chewed them out over the phone - I was gonna try and get the installation for free, but was told it wasnt being charged for ANYWAY. So i didnt know what else to do :P

How long does it take for the HD channels to appear after install? I got installed at 11am but still waiting for them at 3:30pm..not sure what time the engineer said!

Also we are on Digital Select pack which doesnt include Disney Channel. However I see its part of the HD channels, does this mean its included or not?

Very excited to see the difference from the normal digital channels..oh and the dreaded purple menu is no more...yahoo!:D

The HD channels are part of a different system at UPC give them a call on 1908 and tell them they forgot to switch on your HD channels and they will do it there and then.

The HD Disney channel is part of the Disney pack and is not included in the basic packs.

The HD channels on your pack are
    Eurosport HD
    Bio HD
    Crime and Investigation HD
    BBC HD
    National Geographic HD
    Nat Geo Wild HD
    History HD
Discovery HD is part of the MAX pack.

They all have ads except BBC.

If you have a 5.1 amp the HD channels are in Dolby Digital 5.1.

There is an optical output at the back of the box.

Just slip the optical cable in the back and off you go.

Don't forget to turn off the sound on your tv when using the 5.1 amp.

You can record two channels at once but before the 2nd recording starts you must put the box into standby.
