Stuck spacer

    Hi,
I'm trying to remove a carbon fibre spacer from a carbon steerer as I want to lower my stem slightly. The other spacer came off easily but this one seems to be slightly narrower and is getting completely stuck about halfway up the steerer.
Does anyone have any tips on getting it off? Is there any kind of lubricant I can apply? I'm wary of what I can safely apply to a carbon steerer. I'm also wary of tapping at it with anything what with carbon fibre steerers not having the best reputation for robustness, but maybe there is some technique I'm not aware of.

    Thanks in advance.

If its a carbon steerer better to bring it to your lbs than take the risk yourself. Btw was it shop bought or delivered assembled or not? Spacers as you say should just slide off with minimal resistance.

Sounds like the steering tube expander plug is the culprit. Slacken it off a LITTLE bit and the spacer should slide off, too much and the plug will slide down the head tube, then you ahve to take off the fork and invert it, not the end of the world but a pain in the ass !!

Just be sure to retighten the plug again once you have everything on the way you want, obviously before you adjust the headset compression. Stem is always last thing to be tightened.

This thing is really great for retightening most of the carbon parts you are at with any frequency- bars, stem and seatpost clamp. Cheap and portable.

Thanks to each of you for the advice.
I tried loosing the steerer expander as suggested and managed to get the spacer off and the stem reattached.
In answer to velo.2010's question it was a frame that I built up mostly myself, but I had the headset installed initially and then tightened up (after I'd finished putting on the bars, shifters, cables etc.) in my LBS. I'm going to get the steerer cut down soon as it's way too high. When I ordered the frame and fork I asked them to leave the maximum extension and I just got used to it. I want to experiment with the stem a bit lower and when I find a height I'm happy with I'll get it recut and have the whole set up given the once over in the LBS.

    Thanks again.
