Is My Kalash Steel Or Pot Metal?

    Hi,

How can I tell for certain that my Kalash AKS-74N is a full steel version and not the earlier pot-metal/steel mix?

It has full wood handguards, a green sling and a sticker on the hop-up that says QC-06.

    Thanks for your help. :)

As far as I know Kalash are full steel, not pot metal.
Sam (Stercus Addict) will know for sure.

I ask because the only part of my AK that attracts magnets is the skeleton stock. And I paid extra for the "steel"!

It could be made of a non-ferrous metal then, I dunno.

You could strip the gun down and take a dremel with a grinding wheel to the inside of the body do a small grind,,,,,,bright sparks - steel!

Well, if I did that then I certainly wouldn't be able to return it. Nice idea though.

Some researching brings up that the steel ones have laminated wood and tan straps. Mine has full wood and a green strap. It's not looking good...

    steel....or steelish.

I certainly felt the difference even over the paint work between a pot-metal AK47 and
the Steel Kalash AK74. It may sound mad but if you tap your finger nail against the body
of the gun made from steel vs pot metal.

The Pot metal feels more like a dull ringless thud or tapping.
The Steel feels a bit more sharp with a bit more ring to the sound of the tap.
(It may be just down to the thicker pot metal vs thinner walled steel)

Not sure in words how to describe it or if I am making any sense at all.

Well. It's going back because I paid extra for the much improved steel version.

Steel models have laminated wood not a single piece, and should attract magnets to all but the barrel, also big fancy sticker on the box.

    False advertising is false.....

Yup, thing is, a lot of retailers dont know the differernce, and bill them as the same.

Either way, the Kalash is nice... only the steel has the benefit if the cocking handle not snapping as easily... (changed part thank god)

Well, I've had a chat with the retailer and it looks like everything should be sorted out. It seems like an honest mistake.

Apparently, apart from being tougher physically the new steel models have much better gearboxes, which would explain why my mate's brand new AK-105 has a much quieter operation than mine.

Out of curiosity who is the retailer. I am interested in one, but most places are out of stock and the supply from China is a little disrupted at the moment.

Actually, the problem has not been resolved yet. I'm waiting to hear back from them.

I won't mention the original retailer until this has been resolved but one of the retailer's I've been in touch with that apparently has steel Kalashs is Quality Airsoft Supplies. Try them. :)
