I'm going to make a big investment in the new year and buy my 1st car. I'm in 2 minds about which car and I was just wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. Which would you choose and why- the new Ford Fiesta or the Opel Corsa (3 door)?

Unless you've hot driving experience i'd buy something a bit older until you're a bit more confident. Otherwise, unless you're buying diesel the fiesta is the better of the two

I have plenty of confidence and experience in driving, just not in my own car. I just want to know what would be the better car. I wouldn't be sure of the technicalities of either.

The fiesta is the better car, most lads here will tell you that. I like Opel but I don't think there a great car.
Is it a brand new car your on about?

Yeah will be buying a brand new car. Why is Fiesta a better car? Love the way you say 'lads'! I'm sure there're plenty of girls on here who know plenty about cars, lol!

The new Corsa is light years ahead of the older models and one of the best cars that size you can get. Its just the fiesta does everything well and on the hole is a better car. IMO it drives much better than the Corsa and has a nicer interior. If you were going diesel i'd pick the Corsa as it has the better diesel engine. I was driving the 1.4 diesel fiesta at the weekend and it makes a hell of a racket. Otherwise its a fantastic car

Fiesta is also a much fresher design as it was only launched last year. Corsa has been on sale since late 2006 and is getting a mid life make over early in the new year.

If it was the old Fiesta v Corsa then I would choose the Corsa but new Fiesta has raised the game so it would be my choice. Fiesta 1.6 litre Zetec only costs €156 to tax too.

Looks like the Fiesta could be pipping Corsa to the post. How much of a discount should I looking for on a 3 door?

The 1.6 Zetec-s looks like a cracker alright. Even just the looks of the Fiesta put it infront of the corsa imo.

I have a Zetec S currently. It's a good fun car. Quite zippy too. Still only €156 to tax for a year.

I'd hold tight for a bit, looks like alot of manufacturers are reducing their prices over the next couple of months to stimulate sales for next year. Audi, BMW, Volvo have all announced price reductions of on average 9 - 10% so it only makes that main stream makers like Ford will follow suit.

Buying a brand new car is not an investment by any means.

The car will be an investment as such because it will open a lot of opportunities (work wise) up to me, that I wouldn't have without a car. Also, I won't be changing the car for a long time and all I hear after a few years from people who've bought 2nd hand cars, is this and that has gone on the car and needs replacing. Anyway, as I'm sensible with my money and need the car, it's a justified spend in my eyes.

This and that will go on a new car and will need replacing too. Buying brand new is not a guarantee of reliability. If you're truly seriously about wanting to guarantee reliability I'd suggest something with a 7 year warranty rather than a 2 year one (Kia Cee'd). Admittedly the new Corsa is based on the Fiat Grande Punto and should be more reliable than the previous offering by Opel. That said, it's a false economy to buy new because of a mistaken belief that the car might be more reliable than one a year old. You will be able to buy and '09 at a significant reduction in January with no loss of reliability and plenty of warranty left. It's a waste of hard earned money to buy brand new in the current climate.

Buy the Fiesta. I recomend though try get a "next to new" model eg an 09 reg'd but never left the courtyard. they're a lot cheaper

I was under the illusion from my uncle (who works for Merc) that I should be getting a 25% discount on a new car. Anyway, it's cash in hand and I'm sure any car dealership would be snapping my hand off to get my money.

I'm afraid you will not get anywhere near 25% off especially on a Fiesta or Corsa type car.

Really depends on the car. Maybe they may have had that kind of margain getting rid of a few old model Merc's but I couldn't imagine a 25% dealer margin on a Fiesta or Corsa. I'd be thinking more around the 10% mark.

+1 on buying a low mileage 09. You should get a decent deal this time of the year too as dealers will want rid of stock in the hope that next year is better

I probably shouldn't be saying this but my union has a scheme going with Opel and Opel give 3 grand off a new car to union members. So by my calculations 3 grand off 15,000 is 20%.

Pretty sure Opel can give €3,000 off list price on any car they want to, to whoever they want to.
