Looking for some tips or idea/help in relation to upgradding my clubs. I am currently playing with starter set of spaldings and now want to upgrade to a better driver and putter.

The driver I am looking at is the Taylor made R9

The putter is Scotty Cameron putter

Would these be a good choice for a high handicapper (26)

If anyone has any recomendation it would be greatly appreciated.

the r9 is a bit expensive imo, you might consider picking up a used r7 for peanuts unless you are driving well & don't mind spending that is.

there should be lots of well priced used kit now in most pro shops, worth a punt around.

Cheers! sector. Fair point on the price front:eek: but xmas around the corner and a r9 would be better than aftershave.

Mc guirks is doing R9 for €289 Have the Burner for €150

The R9 is brand new and will cost a small fortune (€300-400).
The Taylormade Burner can easily be got for better value...
http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/drivers/318scog/4638pog.asp here it's less than €200 and comes with 2 dozen golf balls thrown in.
My friend was in the states during the summer and picked up the r7 superquad for $100 which was some bargain considering the club is not that old (it's the one I use) and that it was around the €400 mark here when it came out first.
Taylormade release 'new' models and versions all the time so that their 'old' model may be out of favour/fashion but it's still very modern technology. Don't spend the cash unnecessarily is my advice - the older model (still new) or even the 2nd hand ones will be a much better investment... try before you buy in either case.

The putter is a different matter. I don't know if there is any logic to expensive putters but if you love it then go for it! They are very personal; you need to see and feel it.. make sure it suits your eye and your taste. It may not be 'better' than the one you have but if it makes you feel better you probably will putt better... weird science.

Am already convinced not to go for the r9 and will have another look(and try) before I buy. Think I was just caught up in the sales patter anyway:eek:.

I can vouch for the Scotty Cameron! I have the Studio No5 and you know you have something special in your hands. Sure, it's expensive, but it'll give years of service and will become an old friend.

I would seriously consider looking at the MD Driver. It's as good as the big names and has won lot's of awards at a fraction of the cost, although there are great bargains to be had on 2nd hand gear. You can buy the TaylorMade r7 CGB Max for about €140 here: http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/clearance-store/drivers/496scog/3173pog.asp This is a great club, plenty of technology and looks great. I have an r7 TP model, and it's by far the best driver I've ever had.

Dont just go out and buy a scotty, they cost too much money and may not fit you. I have a good knowledge of golf and yet i bought a scotty with the wrong lie angle and putted terribly with it. 2 buddies of mine(pga pro's) convinced me to get rid of it and get something that lay properly for me and im putting super.

Most golf shops will sell you a scotty and they dont care if it suits you are not. I have been buying golf gear of a pro retailer for 10 years who i have trusted and he sold me the wrong scotty and i asked him whether it suited me before i bought it and he said yes!

I will be buying of my buddies anymore even tho they cant beat the other guys price.

    Be carefull with your cash.

I'd also recommend looking at MD Golf, but for a putter rather than the driver. They have a new line called something like "Seve Signature series" that are really nice and great quality. They are milled from carbon steel like the Scotty Camerons but are about 1/4 of the price.

For a driver you can pick up some great bargains second-hand, espescially if you go with a model from a year or two ago. Keep an eye on adverts.ie or in the for sale thread on here. Also golfbidder.co.uk or ebay.
Taylormade seem to be the most popular but Cobra also make some nice drivers and they often aim them towards the higher handicappers (The Cobra L4V from a year or two ago is a great driver).

    Ok just a little update!

Went out today as the weather was too good to miss.

Played Elm green and was talking to the guy in the pro shop about upgrading.... mentioned the R9 , but the guy said he didnt have much in the way of drivers other than the MD tht he was selling off and I could take it out for a round and see wht I think.

Done tht ............. and to cut a long story short I am now the proud owner of an md Driver and only €40 ligher:D

Was surprized to see trekkor talking about the same club i had just purchased when I logged in:eek:. its all good.

Its not all about the money! and will certainly be looking at the putter option in more detail and not just throwing money at it.

Might even have a look at the md range of putters ( cheers Kermit)

Anyway playing Rathcore the weekend so will give the MD another run and hope all continues to go well:D

By the way cheers lads for all you input, much appreciated

Good man. Tbh when your moving from starter clubs to an upgrade your better not to spend huge money as your tastes may change. Also a lot of the cheaper equipment can be very good and the Md driver was a steal.

I don't have one of the latest MD putters..... I have the older Rio putter and I am in no hurry to change it. In my last round but one I had 28 putts - off 18. I very rarely 3 putt.... and at the grand cost of €36 delivered you cant really go wrong!!

p.s. Ignore the price on this site. I didn't pay anywhere near that!

Incase anyone is interested there are still a few (4 I think) MD drivers in the Elm green Proshop for € 40

Nice one with the driver BigAl!! Try out different putters, they don't have to be expensive. I know a 9 handicapper who plays with a kids putter and he's deadly around the greens and it only cost him a tenner!!
