preamp or lead ?

one of my preamp channells has started crackling after a bit and sometimes going dead - only on 48 v phantom , other mics work fine and the condensor mic is fine .

can a lead cause these issues or would the preamp be more likely ?

the preamp measures fine in the sockets , but im worried maybe a heat issue
( no reason , its well vented ) maybe causing a phatom issue after a while .

just wondering if anyones seen phantom problems with mic cables before.

    Possible ...

but surely changing the leads with ones you know are fine (the other chan of the pre, for example) will subtract that element from the issue ?

I think it can. If the 'hot' or 'cold' wire is faulty, but not both, then the dynamic mic will work fine, but phantom power won't be available anymore (it's delivered via 'hot' and 'cold' pins through 6,8Kohm resistors IIRC).

You don't have a different XLR lead to try?

ive changed the lead , so will see what happens

I have a feeling i may have pierced the lead with a drum spike and its causing issues
