    Heya

A friend of mine has a 2005 Toyota Avensis and last week the timing chain snapped. Now according to a local mechanic, after inspecting the damage, she needs a whole new engine practically costing thousands.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Can she claim anything off her motor insurance as this doesn't seem to be normal wear and tear but an obvious manufacturing defect?

The car's out of warranty - does she have any comeback from toyota?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers

She might be able to get someone to re-build the engine, don't know jhow it would price against a new engine. Try IVI, priced an engine for a 2002 primera and was supprised, €1200 fitted. She could talk to Toyota and hope they will help, unlikely though.

Insurance won't be of any assistance with a mechanical failure. It's one of those things. Reliability of all cars has come on so much that failures of any kind are rare but cars are now so complex that when they do happen, they're often catastrophic. A second hand engine is probably the best bet, try IVI, just off the Naas Road.

Check the terms of the original warranty around the timing chain life expectancy. I'd then be ringing Toyota customer services and see what they have to say.

Does the car have a full main dealer service history? This will help your case if the car was serviced by the main dealer as they will be able to support your case.

seen this before, this usually only happens from lack of servicing, recently i had one that hadn't been serviced in 50,000 km, thats over 3 services missed and a bit, if it has a FULL SERVICE history toyota may be willing to make a good will gesture..

...if it's got a fsh, then Toyota are not unreasonable on goodwill offers.

Failing that, a s/hand engine is the way to do it.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I would forget about approaching Toyota if you have no service history, If you have no service history i would say ring IVI engines and get a price for an engine. They will do supply only or supply and fit. It might be worth lifting the head to see how bad things are??
