Films that could be remade today.

So, since it's been the wacky few years full of dodgy and unneccesary remakes (I'll never forgive for the The Hitcher remake) and more to come (Short Circuit, Robocop, Total Recall, The Fly, The Thing anyone?) what film would we like to see be remade and given the respect and care it deserves?

We know some reboots actually work; Batman Begins - didn't like the film but appreciated the concept

Taxi Driver with a "Batman Begins" style origin story? :p (The line we hear to justify every remake nowadays)

I'm personally looking forward to Akira as screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children Of Men, Iron Man) have been on board to write it up, if they can decipher it well enough :P Though it more than likely won't be a scratch on the anime, it will be an interesting concept.

If they can get the bike right, i'll be happy.

Maybe a remake of the Riefenstahl classic 'Triumph des Willens'. I cried at the end...

    Heh heh, too true.

Who wants to bet Shia labeouf or someone as equally young and annoying will be in this.

I would love to see a Demons remake. A good few people I know are big fans of it for some reason, but having watched it at the horrorthon a couple of years ago, I can't see why. Acting is terrible, effects are terrible, dialogue is terrible, but the idea behind it I think is sound enough, a bunch of people getting trapped inside a cinema during a zombie / demon break out.

Remakes are always going to be part of movies, but it annoys the pants off me. a movie made at a point in time is the sum total of what it was meant to be (at that point in time). Lucas re-editing and re-releasing Star Wars for the nth time to add a CGI out of place scene is just hitting us again in the wallet. Maybe a decent remake of that might work! haha

That said some remakes are superb, anyone see 'The End of the Affair'? (1999 version and 1955 version I love that movie.

Anyways, short circuit might be interesting. Then the countless sequels & prequels. {sigh} - prefer more original type of movies to be honest, good character ones or even a lighthearted rom/com.

jesus christ. I actually won't watch anything with him in it, he's incapable of playing anything other than a whinging teenager. i'd love to smack that kid.

For some reason I always had a hankering to see Kevin Costner remake and star in High Noon.

Dances With Wolves, Wyatt Earp and the excellent Open Range all lead me to think he would do a great job.

It is not that High Noon needs a remake, it is just something I like the sound of.

Shane is another I would love to see him remake, but Eastwood has already remade that with Pale Rider.

I Am Legend is another I would like to see remade, as the three attempts at it so far kept getting worse at each attempt.

I would love to see a version that followed the book.

You'll be pleased to know De Caprio might has his sights set on the Third Man.

a Carrie remake would be interesting but would just be aimed at the tweenies and the good aul americana cliches would be exagerrated as per usual!

I think the 2nd one was the best of the three. All have played around with the story with the first making the most sense overall. Still don't get what the point of the 3rd one was. Wait 20 years and there will be another for sure

:( Can you imagine how that would pan out?

Eastwood replaced by Jason Statham, Burton by Stallone!

    +1 for this!

I really like the book and am baffled why an exact movie adaptation hasn't been made yet

Another +1 from me. Definitely a book that's true essence has been destroyed boy celluloid. The only problem is, how can you convey the psychological breakdown of a man, in an apocalyptic society, with no dialogue ;)

Remake "The Raven" (1935 starring Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi, based upon Edgar Allan Poe's poem), but staying with the original horror genre screenplay, and adding modern day Fx capabilities to enhance the nightmarish plot. Not the silly 1963 comedy-horror pseudo-remake where the truly scary nature was lost, with only the title resembling the original film.

There's talk of David Croneberg remaking The Fly. Steven Spielberg was to remake a film, think it's Harvey but not quite sure (being partially deaf) as i heard it on smodcast.

I think with a good narrative in places it would word.

Plus there would be dialogue and narrative with the dog scenes (in the book the dog bits are even more heart rendering than the changed dog bits in the movie)

Plus given that the vamps are chatty in it, especially Ben Cortman, and Ruth is a talker, there would be plenty of dialogue.

Plus you would have the bits with the burning pits and
his wife coming back to him as an infected human/vamp.

Neville's past could be told in flashbacks, like in the book, and with the right actor playing Neveille, it could be a stunning film.

The trick would be finding that actor. He would have to be tall, with somewhat germanic features, be able to wear a beard well, and be convincing as being able to wield a microscope just as easily as a gun.

While the build is a bit wrong I could almost imagine Viggo Mortensen in the role.

    viggo-mortensen.jpg

Another that has the stoic look would be Ray Stevenson, but I could not see a mega million blockbuster budget being placed on his shoulders.

He does have the right look and build though.

The third that comes to mind is also of wrong build, but something about him works for the role (well in my head anyway). He is Mads Mikkelsen, ignore his Casiono Royale look.

    Without beard

    With Beard.

Ironically Ray Stevenson is behind him in the pic.

In the book Neville is described as a being blond with piercing blue eyes (not quite Will Smith ;)).

I think Daniel Craig would be ideal! Okay he is rather short but he certainly has the build & wears a beard well.

What kind of a build are we discussing here, I haven't read the book in a while (must get my hands on it again!). I just remember the psychotic conflict, Ruth, and the flashbacks. The book itself is easily transferable to film, even in it's current state. The problem of course is finding a Director who READ THE DAMN BOOK! Will smith? WHY THE HELL WAS HE CAST!?!?!

    I actually despised that movie...

If I remember correctly Neville was a few inches over six foot and with broad shoulders and strong build.

I have not read the book in a bit, but I am pretty sure that is correct.

As for the blue eyes and blonde hair. Contacts can give the blue eyes and the hair colour is easy.

Ray Stevenson has the blue eyes already though. :D

Stevenson's too cheerful looking, you need someone who looks on the point of desperation.

And I think the build is excusable, we just need a psychotic ****-up :P. The whole psychology of the book is the most appealing factor to me! :)

Ahh come on, in fairness to Ray, he looks bloody narked in pretty much all his film roles, so I thought I would show a pic of him smiling. :D

Just think of him in Rome, King Arthur, The Punisher, and Outpost for a non smiling version.

You'd have to show me a clip of him being "narked" :P.

Might win me over with that, christ I'll make him taoiseach if he brings chinese :P

There's only one actor for Neville in my mind tbh, and that's Michael Ironside. When I read the book, he was who I pictured, and I can't shake the association.

Yea he is, unfortunately he's gonna make a CGI version of the rabbit which doesn't fill me with confidence.

    I want this painting:

Though the new Simpsons cartoons suck balls I always giggle at this little nod of Harvey:

+1 on Ironside for Neville, Karl. Love that guy. "See yoo at da partee, Rictah!!"

Interesting choice. I think he would be an even harder sell to film execs to have as a leading man in a big budget film though. I think he would be seen as a straight to dvd or tv series type face.

Also he may be a bit too American looking (yes I know he is Canadian) for the role. I remember an interview with Richard Matheson where he described his inspiration for how Neville looked as being taken from a cross between a burly viking and the stereotypical look associated with Aryanism that Rosenberg used as his racial theory in the late 1920's and early 1930's.

    Remaking Harvey???? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Jimmy Stewart films should be offlimits for remakes. Nobody can play a Jimmy Stewart role better than he did.
