    Hello everyone,

I hope your able to help.
Does anyone know how I could resize over 800 jpeg images in photoshop? Is there a 'batch edit' of some sort that I could do.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks
    One2One.

There's a power tool for windows xp called resize images. Install that, highlight all the files you want to resize, right click them, and bob's your distant relative.

well you could either write a simple action to do it, or use one of the shareware products out there

    infraview, graphic convertor etc

or if you have lightroom you could do it in there

Thanks for that. How do I do it? :S I'm not great with photoshop! Thanks again!

In Photoshop - make an action, then make it in to a droplet.

Then simply drop all images on to the droplet and watch it do it's magic. Simple as that. :D

Right thanks. I am going to try the action suggested by Paulw. Bear with me, as I have no idea what I am doing! :(

there are one or 2 pitfalls to the actions/droplet thing

    1. make sure NOT to save images in same place, or you will overwrite your full size ones

    2. if you have both portrait and landscape shaped images you need to be carefull as you can only do one or other, ie it will resize them all to the same on one side

if you are unsure i suggest using something like graphic convertor or someting instead, it will be less stressfull and less chance of something going wrong

There is a simple way around that. Can't remember now, but will post when I get home.

On a similar note though, I've yet to find a way to write an action to resize to a maximum file size. Anyone?

    Ok, you've lost me now.

Surely the maximum filesize would be to leave the file alone and not resize at all?

Or am I missing what you want to do??

    file>automate> batch

or make a web gallery and just use the large images

For example all files 800 pixel on longest side (no problem) and maximum 100kb (doesn't work)

Thanks for all of the above, still having some trouble though. I need to reduce these images so that they are only 128kb in size. Any ideas? These are 10mp images taken in Large [3888x2592] format! Any ideas please?

this would be the quickest way if you're happy with a maximum pic height or width of 800px.

You're probably going to have to reduce both the size and the quality so. Start at about 75%? What size do they need to be?

Yeah but thats hit and miss. Is there a foolproof way to do it?

Irfanview has a plugin so when saving jpeg you can set the file size, this works in batch mode to. Just need to install the plugin pack(s) or the individual plugin http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/

I find Irfanview brilliant for re-sizing images if you want a particular size in length or height or a particular DPI. The batch conversion tool is excellent. I use it all the time for converting images for the Web.

Does anyone know of a tool that can re-size images to a required file size? e.g. 1mb. keeping the DPI the same and any IPTC data in the image.
For example: Convert 50 jpegs of different file sizes, but the same DPI (300), to 50 jpegs of 1mb file size, with the minimum loss in quality.

Or is there a fast way to do it in Photoshop?

    Cheers

    Sorry Ghost Train....just saw your reply....will have a look..Tks

Photoshop, as far as I can see, doesn't appear to be able to handle this at all

Which is surprising. I'm trying to get away from a plethora of software packages as work arounds for this and that. A solution would be nice. :p

    Ghost Train you're my hero...:D :D:D:D

I just checked out the RIOT plugin with irfanview and it worked a treat in Batch mode. I can now process my images, do any required adjustments and fill in the IPTC information all in photoshop and just save the image in full size. When finished I fire up Irfanview, select batch conversion, make the required selections, and off it goes.

I go for my favourtite beverage and when I return all the images are re-sized and ready for emailing..:D :D:D

I rekon at least 30mins shaved off my workflow......again many thanks :D:D:D

It's simply mad though that something as expensive as Photoshop won't do something as simple as this :(

I'd imagine you could put together a script to do that. You would need to run some sort of iterative loop to check the file size and then recompress. You would probably end up with file sizes about the 100k size mark but not exactly. And TBH it's not a feature I would imagine many people would want.

    Imagemagick is your fellow:
    mogrify -verbose -resize 600x600+0+0 *.jpg

If you are still trying to do this in photoshop, here is how I do it in CS4. 2 stages:
    Stage 1:
    File>Scripts>Image Processor
Just define the to and from folders and insert pixel sizes and run.

    Stage 2:
    File>Save for Web & Devices
Adjust percentage of quality desired and this will adjust the file size accordingly.

This is really quick and easy to do. My workflow after every wedding is to process my raw files into various folders eg. proofs, album, portraits, web ...etc. The above method is how I save for web. As a guide and to give you an idea how this looks in 'real life', all the images on my website are 600 pixels tall (stage 1), and saved at between 60% and 100% quality (stage 2) which gives file sizes ranging from 90kB to 150kB.

Dont be afraid of dropping the quality percentage, as anything from 60% up gives near perfect results.

I didn't mention that I also run stage 2 as an action. I believe an earlier post described how to do this

    Hope this helps

    Hi Steve,

but that doesn't answer it either I'm afraid as it's still hit and miss.

If you want to save a file as say 100k, it's no problem to go save as and do it manually.

But not automatically, which is plain daft, and is my point. It's hit and miss.

I batch resize all of my images in photshop for web use. Firstly with one image open create a new action, call it resize, resize your image to the size you require, I resize all of mine to 30% for quick uploads, the save as in a new folder within the folder your image is in. Close up and go to file, automate, batch, click resize and select your file of images you want to resize, then you can override the save as action to any location, this means you dont have to re-record the action whenever you do it with a different file, just direct the batch to go to your location of choice.

Hope this helps, if you have anymore problems let us know and one of us can go into more details.
