Rugby and Cycling

    Hey,

I got a job (woo!) in Leopardstown and probably will be moving to Tallaght. I really want to cycle to work but thats a 13km cycle one way, how will that compliment my rugby and weights training? Is it just a matter of eating and resting more? If it gets me fitter and I can maintain my strength and size, I'll be very happy. I train twice a week with the club, two weights sessions and a match.

Moving to Tallaght, eh? I know of a good gym up that direction ;)

I'd say to a large degree just get the milk or some other good food into you so you're repaired for the rugby training, since this is the most destructive part of your training. (Destructive in the fact you're taking knocks all the time, so you're always picking up niggles).

I would advise that without fail you stretch after cycling, and foam roll each evening. A white foam roller from physio supplies costs under €20 iirc.

Thanks. I think the Tallaght idea is out the window, time wise its to far really to cycle each day. Even so I think I'll give Crossfit a go, I think its something I could really do with, like I can just about do one pull up! Disgraceful. Once I get settled in, wherever I live I'll give Tom a call.

OP a 26k round trip before training might seem a bit daunting at first, but you'll be surprised at how quickly you'll adapt.

My daily commute is more than twice that (except in the winter when I'm a pussy and bottle out of cycling :P ).

If your going to give it a try my suggestion would be to go weight training immediately following a cycle, same with the rugby as 13km really isn't that far once you get used to it, I promise you after a few weeks it'll be little more than a warm up.

My routine would be very similar, I cycle (20k each way) then straight into either weight training, or (for me) Judo training.

Its very do'able but as Colms says get your nutrition right, and early nights for recovery.

How long would that cycle take you? I'm just thinking about it in my case if I do 15km/ph on average and then you have traffic lights its about an hours commute?

I'll agree with Mak, I was cycling 26K a day for the first week it wrecked me :), after that I would cycle 13K to work then 10K to play an hour of football and maybe some weights then an 18K cycle home twice a week and in the winter too :D. It doesn't take long for your body to adapt.
