    i have an Audi A4. 1,9 diesel
anyway, recently the engine has started making a squeeking or whirring noise when running in neutral.
wonder what could it be? :(

    Hi Nice_Guy

Have the same car and the same thing happened to me last year. Turned out to be the alternator.

The pully that has the belt attached to it.

It broke about 3 weeks after i noticed the noise. When i reved the car the pully would move in and out a tiny bit.

Does the battery light flicker when your driving the car?

Does it only happen when the clutch is released and goes away when you press it in?

If so its your clutch release bearing.

Otherwise it could be an alternator, or timing belt tensioner amongst a lot of other possibles.
