New amp

    Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a guitar combo, something that I can play at home (kids and wife here so it has to be quiet at home but give the same sound as what you would get at full whack in a pub). I have a marshall 4x12 cab and a bass head which I did use pedals through about 16 years back but much too loud to use at home. The modelling amps seem great. I have looked at the line 6 especially the new spider 4 amps. They seem great from all the youtube videos. The vox vt seems good too but doesn't have the harmonising effect. I have seen the Peavys but no idea about them. Has anyone any experience of these type of amps. The 1000 euro a year for the kids is gone now so I'm on a bit of a limit!! Would it be possible to take a line out from the small amp and run it through the marshall. Open to any good ideas.
    Thanks

Marshall JCM 800, 900 or 2000 series.. Modelling amps are total sh!tboxes, best to stick with a valve amp, better quality better sound but at a bigger expense..

If it's for home use then something like the Vox AC4tv would be ideal. Even a 4 watt valve gets loud when cranked, but the vox has the ability to turn the wattage down to 1 watt and even a 1/4 watt. Which means you get sweet cranked tone at low volumes, it even has a speaker out. I have a Fender Champ 600, which is 5 watts, and it gets far too loud for bedroom use when cranked.

I have a 5 watt tube amp with built in attenuator and even at it's highest level of attenuation it is still too loud for when the family are in the house and that is with a 1x12. Isn't a 4x12 going to be even louder??
Have you ever heard of the zvex nano head? I think it's lower that 1 watt and could possibly drive that 4x12 but I can't help thinking you'd be better off going solid state and getting something cheap like a microcube? Decent sounding tranny amp IMO :)

If it's for home house with a decent (not perfectly saturated power valve) sound then any of the modeling amps are good. I had a Roland Cube and it was great. I use some line 6 gear and I think that is great too. I have an older model Vox and I wasn't really impressed but I believe they have improved. Get to XMusic or similar and try some out.

I have a vox ad100, they are pretty good. One 12AX7 preamp tube, and the power can be turned down to 1 watt. I own a line 6 spider 2 as well, the vox is a lot better than the line 6. That being said, I have never played a spider 4

I have one since a college mate recommended one to me for an entry level tube amp, It really is a wicked little thing you'd never guess its only 5watts!

Ive since bought a fender deluxe (40w tube)
and it hardly gets a look in now, or even at all since I bought it!

this really is aclass little amp, and for €160 is unbelievable :)
