Garda Special Branch had a few R18 Turbos in their day, it would be nice to track one of them down!

I'm not (legally)able to put an original KK registration on it so I do not know whether to put 79KK or ZV on it though the ZVs are in 5 digits now which doesn't look right either, though because it a French car I might get away with the long ZV spread out and put some yellow bulbs in the headlights.

I have always thought that the pre facelift metal bumper 18 looked better than the plastic bumper post facelift. AFAIK the Turbo was only available post facelift though.

Looks a nice straight motor. God be good to the days when all we wanted was an 18GTS with headlamp wash wipes. A very cool looking car.

i think the r18 was introduced in 1978 and right hand drive in 1979 so that would be one of the oldest right hand drive r18sin such good condition with such low mileage . i have seen a good few of them in the 80s with 400k on the clock and still going perfectly ,the more i think about your 79 r18 the more i want it

It was the electric windows and clear globes for the central locking that did it for me!

......yeas with the little orange pips that appeared inside the globe......COOL !

A neighbour of ours had one and I used to press the button until the system cut out for a while !!

There was actually a little button on the underside of the dash to reset the central locking if that happened--most people didnt even know it was there:rolleyes:

you wont as each and every one of them were written off..........these the wrx'sf their day in the 80's and the gougers goaded the cops into street chases and the rest is confined to history.....like the early 911 turbo's...if you were'nt ready for the woooosh from the turbo a ditch was forthcoming.....likewise the lag was dire so a very tricky car to drive.

They also gave problems ,I am told, with the brake equalising valves which caused the rear wheels to lock up prematurely, under heavy braking and you can imagine what happened then. Nowadays if you treat it as a vaguely sporting car with enough poke to pass out all the guys doing 40mph on a road run then its a dream to drive .

Unfortunately this story does not have the happy ending that I had hoped for:o. Went to Holyhead to collect the 18,and to say that it wasn't as described is an understatement. OK, the interior was mint but that was the only good thing that I could say. Its like that the car in the picture was a totally different car. Needs two front wings and repairs to inner wings, needs repairs tovright rear quarter panel AND a fully body respray. Also needs a front bumper. To say that I am disgusted is an understatment. What ever about loosing the cost of travel, I also lost out on 2 possibly better cars because I assumed that this car would be better as my contact has always supplied me with cars that are always better than he described----Needless to say ,I didnt bring it home and when he said that he would do something on the price I said that it wasnt about the money:mad:

OUch John, sorry to hear that.

How did he explain the difference in the photos and the car's actual condition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

If fallen into that trap before. Always ask exactly when the photos were taken !

Sorry to hear that John !
