Green Speeds - Stimp Readings

I've always wondered how the average club greens compare to the greens the pros get to see week in, week out which apparently are in the 9.5 to 11.5 stimpmeter region.

Anyone have any idea what the reading would be on an average Irish club course??

there was a big deal made about the speed of our greens on captains day a couple of months back, they were clocked at 11.5 ,everyone was caught out by them . normaly i would say they run on average about 9.5 .

The USGA stimpmetered putting greens across the country to produce the following recommendations:
    Slow greens: 4.5 feet
    Medium greens: 6.5 feet
    Fast greens: 8.5 feet

For the U.S. Open, they recommend:
    Slow greens: 6.5 feet
    Medium greens: 8.5 feet
    Fast greens: 10.5 feet

You come across a lot of clubs claiming their greens are 9 or 10. Ive a feeling it aint so.

Absolutely no chance Castleknock run at 9.5 normally, anytime I've played there I've found them slow. The greens were running just under 9 at my home club for captain's this year and they were as quick as anything I've played in this country. Quickest I've putted on anywhere was 10.5 and they were scary fast.

Yeah I would imagine a lot of places will feel that they have quicker greens than they would actually turn out to be.

I played in Portmarnock Links a few weeks ago in one of the Titleist Tuesday Pro-Am's and the greens there were as fast as I have seen thus far. If my local course (which normally runs pretty quick for Medals etc, by average standards) is supposed to be in the 9 to 10 range then Portmarnock was easily 2 or 3 more. Much more likely that P'nock was about 10ish and my club more like 7.5 I would think!!

Incidentally, I played Glasson a few days later and the contrast was shocking. Some of the slowest greens I have come accross......
