So, I am wondering if anyone knows a RECENT review of how much performance is killed using x16/x4 vs x8/x8.

I have looks extensively, but can only find stuff from early 2008, which we all know is obsolete and useless now :D

I have heard though it's no more than 20% from x16/x16 to x16/x4...

    ?

I wouldn't be so dismissive of those results. 20% difference in performance? Very unlikey!

If you could find that test from 08 plz post it up

I only mention it because it is using old Chipsets and old GPUs, while I'll be using 5850s and P55 (which has the onboard PCIe controller) :D

Which also means you'll be using PCI-E 2.0 which, so an x4 port will give x8 PCI-E 1.0 performance.

I thought the P55 boards get configured as x8/x8 in CF or SLI mode?

The difference would be negligible in either case, I'd reckon, max maybe 5% at high res/high settings.

P55 can indeed do 8x/8x, but it's still limited to the mobo, some can't do two x8 eletrical lanes.

Recent review of PCI-E scaling from techpowerup for a 5870. Not sure how this translates to other (older) graphics cards though.

    You sir are Epic Win.

Have a Cake (it is still a lie though :P)

I am planning on 5850s, so this is as close as I'll get without actually doing it myself :D

Wow, holy hells bells. Just read it, the Hit from x4 is nowhere near as bad as I thought. I guess 2x 5850s at 16x/4x crossfire will be fine :D
