If you'd said Monday boards spin I might have been tempted out for my first spin with you folks. But EPIC spin has me wundering.

How epic is epic? mountains or flat? i'm up for a pretty sizable spin......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 385 ✭✭emty

Ahem...think the Boards Epic was already on this weekend :D.
Am heading out to get very drunk with my good friend Unionman, will post again when I get back.

any chance we could leave little bit later? Especially since we have to bring lights.

10:30 then? I was thinking pretty standard stuff, Enniskerry (we can go by Johnny Foxes if people like, Google Maps just doesn't allow it), Sally Gap, Lugalla, Laragh, Wicklow Gap, Lakes, Military Camp, Bohernabreena. Around 120km. A bit of climbing. Should be back well before dark but just in case.

Like this but not going over the bridge that doesn't exist any more.

@velo.2010- feel free to come along there are several points you could turn back if it is too much (right at Sally Gap is an obvious option.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

@Blorg I dont think it would be 'too much' for me. My limiting factor getting to a Boards spin has been my location in Kildare. Plus I was advised to give the long cycles a miss after I got a bit over excited with the new bike and was doing far too much.

However I could do with a break from the stuff im doing now.

Edit, I could try and meet at the Gap. Got a time!

Wife and kids are away for the week. If the Beasty can be awakened on a Bank Holiday this will be my first boards spin - treat me gently guys:)

Don't know Dundrum (other than the shopping centre!) - Looking at the map, I presume the Luas bridge where you meet is at the junction of the R112 and R117?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭mfdc

Just a note for ye - the marathon is on tomorrow @ 9am. Course is here - http://dublinmarathon.ie/map-2009.pdf By 10:30 the elites will be about mile 18 while the rest of us plebs are strung out back to the 10 mile mark, so most of the course on the south side will be closed.

Something to keep in mind for getting to Dundrum!!

I'm in, but not for the whole thing.

That truly is EPIC Blorg. A 24hr walk?:eek:

Hope to join in for most of it.

Legs too wrecked. Went to do that route today, but bottled it at Roundwood and turned around and went up Luggala again to head out to Kilbride. Lack of daylight, and bastard wind and incessant rain were my mitigating factors. Hope the rain is gone tomorrow, have fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

@velo- my apologies. I reckon Sally Gap around noon would be likely if we actually leave Dundrum around 10:45 or so. Rough guess, I often catch up there myself. We would tend to stop in Laragh for lunch for an hour or so otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

So is it 10.30 to 10.45 at Dundrum? If I bring my new light I'm afraid you'll keep us out till it's well dark just to see it in action.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

It is 10:30. 10:45 is the expected realistic departure time especially given that I am involved in this endeavour,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

Considering your route, thats good going to Sally Gap in that time!

Perhaps a 10:30 depart at Dundrum for you guys would be better just looking at the route and considering daylight hours. Ive no lights for the roadbike but would like to do as of the route without having to swing back towards home.

Ps An hour for lunch! I'd be getting twitchy after 20 minutes after wolfing down a sambo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

Cool. If I'm not there by 10.45....leave.

What. Everyone now just meeting at that junction instead of Dundrum?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,390 ✭✭✭IM0

whats the average spd for a ride like this for you guys btw (not inc stops)
Is it more a touring ride rather than intense group ride?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

I'll give Dundrum a miss and just head up to Horner.

@ me@ucd I'd say spins are more towards a touring ride rather than intense group rides. A happy ground somewhere between both.

    Point A on the maplink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

It's the junction at the bottom of the climb up to Sally Gap. Technically the memorial is a bit down that road (the one you come up in the W200) but I am presuming we are meeting at the junction.

    B in this

If you are coming up to the Gap via the Kildare side. Once you get to the Gap turn left and head toward Dublin. After 8km, the road goes straight to Rathfarnham, or turns sharply right and downhill. Liam Horner memorial is there.

Right so Leavingin 15 miuntes. I'll be doing a bad impression of what Contador might look like next season in Caiisse gear coming up west side of Gap.

I'll be at the Gap not going to Horner.

Well that was painful.Hope your day went a bit easier,Unionman :).
Same route as Saturday but with less good-looking boardsies and a lot more testosterone :D.

Did 129km with Nietzscheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaen today. Very tired now, even I was drafting for most of the spin!

That's the most I've done since the start of August. Good break in for the new bike though.

..but did you get to use the lights?

Nice to meet up with you guys - my first venture into the hills since the Tour de Kilkenny, and if I had no baled out at Sally Gap I would have held the rest of you back with all those climbs to come:).

Still I managed 60k, and over 900m of climbing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

That was good today, nice to meet some of the guys. Beat the darkness home, I think my shades were too tinted, plenty of light left.

My decending wasnt great, think I need a couple of lead weights at the top of a climb.

Plus, no more Trek stick from now on. 3 Madones on the road today!

18 degrees, bright with southerly breeze. Sounds good to me. Late getting to Sally Gap today, no problem for Wednesday.

Good spin, a bit of effort was required in places!

Good to meet a new face in velo.2010, nice Madone you have there, I have always liked Trek bikes (used to have a Trek 5000 myself.)
