Irish Rail €10 Dublin Deal - Train leaves 10 minutes before limit time

Basically, an enterprise is leaving Dundalk at 09:10 (09:12 according to the online journey planner). In order to avail of the €10 day return deal to Dublin, the train has to leave after 09:20.

Will I have any hope of receiving the cheaper fare, as opposed to paying the €23 it will cost otherwise, if it was only 10 minutes later?

I think it would be a bit mean of them not to allow it over just 10 minutes. I mean I could always drive to Drogheda and buy a ticket there, which would solve the problem but I really would not like to do this.

Just buy the ticket and hope nobody checks? Not entirely beyond the realm of possibility...

In other words intentionally fare-evade, good plan.

OP, has it not occourred to you that the ticket limit is set at 9.20 specifically to exclude use on that train? It sounds like a typical off-peak promotion designed to boost figures on trains with plenty of spare seats, if the 9.10 is already busy then they wouldn't want it available for cheap day returns.

Not really, because before the bridge collapse near Malahide, the next train after the 8.30 one was 9.55. The limit was still 9.20 then (which probably affected subsequent stations such as Drogheda, Laytown, Balbriggan). After the bridge collapse, the train times were completely reshuffled and the enterprise now goes at 9.10, unlike the 11.38 it used to go at. The limit wasn't changed from 9.20.

So I would say that the 9.20 limit does not refer specifically to that train, as that is probably the previously 11.38 train moved forward as they only have two trainsets, out of three.

The limit is there specifically to rule out all trains which depart before that from all stations. Its not just a random time. And I would imagine, that even if the train were delayed beyond 9.20, the website mentions scheduled trains and since it is schelduled to leave before then, you won't get a cheap fare.

Given the messing about that will ensue with swapping to buses etc would you ot be better off getting the Matthews direct coach? It takes the same time as the train and is only 12 euro return

I had considered that, and I probably will go with that option. What I love about Matthews Coaches is that they are reliable, comfortable (all the buses are 08/09 I think, and with wifi) and they have a very high frequency timetable (every half hour at some points, every hour at others).

Thanks for all the answers anyway!

They aren't going to allow discount fares that people will snap up when there are capacity problems.
