Dish blown away, what now?

I want to be future proof for when my TV dies.

I have a sky+ box with no sky subscription. My UK FTV card is about to expire.

I have a lot of movies on HDD that I plug into the DVD to play.

I would like to have a HD capable (for when the TV dies) PVR that is also connected to my wireless network & can play from other devices, such as my laptop.

Am I dreaming or is there something reasonable out there for this price?

    not really.

My dish blew away so I have to get at least a new dish, while im at it might as well get an aerial.

So a combo PVR would be handy.

Also, should be HD so I dont have to replace next time the TV needs replacing.

Mvision HD 200 Combo ( satellite and DTT receiver )

DTT UHF Aerial ( for the RTE DTT service )

64cm Triax dish ( does not rust )

    MTI or Icecrypt LNB

    120g hard drive for Mvsion

    1m HDMI cable for Mvision

That list should see you right for 10 years or so.

I can recommend a good aerial/sat installer located not too far away from Abbeyfeale if required ch750536.

    pm me for details.

    q. Will this work for normal aerial, DTT wont happen for a good while yet.

I have one of these from a previous Sky+ installation. Can I use the LNB from it to add to the above dish?

    Thanks for the help.

    ch750536,
take a read of the DTT threads over in the Terrestrial forum.

    Especially this one.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055462123

If you can already receive a good picture on UHF from Mullaghanish (TV3 and TG4) then DTT could be a reality for you right know. Mind you, these are still engineering tests - but pretty reliable up to now.

If Mullaghanish is the correct transmitter for your area, then a good outdoor Group A UHF antenna is the way to go to futureproof yourself for DTT. You could combine this with a VHF Log Periodic (you may already have one of these), possibly indoors in the attic to keep your Analogue VHF RTE1 and RTE2 reception from Mullaghanish until it is switched off.

The Sat and PVR capabilities of the Mvision are supposed to be good.
There's more on this box on the Terrestrial forum also.

    http://tvtrade.ie/show/27,Grid-UHF-Aerial

Would that do the job for digital?

I was never a fan of those wideband grid antennas. Too wideband - gain too low.

Try an 18-element Group A Yagi - Triax make good ones.

I'm in Limerick tomorrow, where would be the best place to pick up the cable, aerial & dish (best being cheapest of course).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 907 ✭✭✭MiketheMechanic

best never the cheapest I'm afraid!

Not sure there's a Bricks and mortar shop that sells all of these at reasonable prices in Limerick

Jack Fitzgerald at Howleys Quay should have the Group A aerial and mount pole if required.

Kellehers Electrical on Dock Road will have a roll of some good foam CT100 coax.

Electrical Factors in Crosgalla may have both or these

Best getting all of these, especially the Triax TD64 or 78 dish and LNB online. Try satellite.ie. Tony's a reputable sat supplier in Dublin and is on these boards a lot. He can assist you with your Terrestrial needs also and for a reasonable price.

This is the one I ordered
    http://www.satellitetv.ie/shop/index.php?controller=product&path=20&product_id=17

    Is a dual.

nope, those lnb's are for elliptical dishes.

i'm sure steve will point you in the right direction and update your order :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭stevethesatguy

I have sent you an email with an update

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

Thanks to stevethesatguy received dish, lnb & aerial.

since it blew down had been ****e weather, still without TV....

anyway, got up on the roof yesterday, managed to remove the old dish & it just crumbled like paper! (only 3 years old). Then it started raining so had to retreat.

Will update you on the cork reception once its all up.

Mullaganish DTT is currently off the air. :(
Was expected to be back on end of last week.
    I will make enquiries tomorrow.
Youu should still receive TV3 and TG4 (analogue ) on the aerial you have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

All up & running now. Is a bit odd.

I dont have the box yet so still have a sky box without sub but UK FTA card in it. Also have the aerial up pointing to Cork.

I have RTE 1 (slightly fuzzy), RTE 2, TV3 TG4 (all fine) from the aerial - not DTT at this point.
    SKY FTA from the dish.

So now just looking for one of those combo boxes.

OK, looking at the MVision box we have:

    HD300

    HD200

Most people are advising the HD200. Is the 300 better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭John mac

    a bit cheaper here .

I cant see much of a difference , looks, and extra cam slot on the 300.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,038 ✭✭✭slegs

There is a software split (breaks off after 4.43 from HD200) so I am looking for what is extra different. It doesnt run as hot as the HD200 also and there is double the system ram so it should run a bit quicker all round. The 300 has an extra front USB also.

Yep - I don't know about the HD300 (because I don't have one) but the HD200 definitely generates a fair bit of heat even in standby.

OK, looking to order the 300, thanks for all your help. I'll review the 300 when it turns up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭spfeno

    Apparently the 300 plays DivX/AVI

Just a newbie studying up on these (very grateful to all BOARDS contributors)and looks like I'm gonna go for the 300 myself - it exactly what I need

Anyone had any experiences with SaorTV ?

Unit arrived today, took about 20 mins to setup. Excellent service SaorTV, forums on your site are very good too.

Tip : It has a mains power switch at the back. ;)

About to do the upgrades, am hoping it has enough power via usb for my drive.

All I need now is a HDTV (but then this was about future proofing rather than the purchase)
