;) Don't know what it was like where you were but there was a gale force wind this morning on my cycle . Normally would head up into the Comeragh's on my Saturday cycle but didn't fancy the blustery wind in exposed hills . Might as well have gone up there , feeling as tired as ever I did after a spell on the toughest of climbs !
Did Waterford to Dungarvan return instead ..........my God the headwind to Dungarvan was unreal , couldn't get past 10mph sometimes on my bike computer. That's the kind of speed I might attain on the climb up the Mahon Falls ! It was like a 30 mile climb all the way to Dungarvan . Tailwind all the way back to Waterford but winter's well and truly here lads n' lassies !!:D

    I'd stick with miles if I were you - it's a bit easier than saying "couldn't get past 10 x 1.60934km/h sometimes ..."

I'm with you Deisetrek, I think I was doing the cycling equivalent of moonwalking out that road this morning. Although I just thought of all the pussies who decided to stay in bed this morning and that made me feel better.

Us Waterford folk are made of tough stuff. Nearly got blown off the bike on the coast road between dunmore and tramore. Loads of sticks and stuff on the roads, slippy riding.

Bloody tough this morning too. And with the debris on the road I decided to take the mountain bike.

    Toughest 20 miles I've done in a while....

    But....what doesn't kill you.....:D

I was just out for a short spin yesterday, I think I did a record time from beaumont to howth (via clontarf) without even peddling ;), then on the way back it was like going backwards when it was gusting but I just got home before the rain so was happy :)

Lovely out there today. Went for 90km betwen Molls Gap and Glengariff and back. Wet and windy, but none the less a good time to be out.

Met two groups of 2 heading over the Caha's and met El Tonto and Mrs. Tonto at Molls Gap.

But sure I'd have probably been better off on the roller/turbo!!

    Sure of course you would.
You would have only got wet from Sweat.
You would have been breathing still dusty indoor air none of that fresh stuff that blows about.
You would have had complete controll of the surface and gradient of the roads yor mind had to imagine. None of this having to follow the same roads people have been using since they were dirt tracks.

Think how well you would have felt after that instead

Nice enough day for a cycle alright. Did Cork-Kinsale-Cork 60km. fresh day but the headwind by the airport was killer, made the airport hill feel like HELL.

Nice bike ROK ON. It looks like your running Ultegra SL gruppo? Thinking of getting the crankset at or after christmas. My bike currently has a mix of components which dont really do the frame justice.

How is it compared to what you had before? Also heard some reviews about the ice-grey finish easily scratching. Any feedback would be welocome.

I 'did a Dirk' ;) and dodged going out in the gales this morning. Instead I put together the new turbo and did an hour on it.....christ almighty I didn't think anything could be so boring. It's going to be a long winter....

I expect many more people will be "doing a dirk" if it keeps up like this. What turbo did you go for?

I cycled coast road Tramore to Stradbally and returned home on the N25 this morning.Wind sure was a beast on coast road, but as already stated in another thread, had a tail wind on the way back.Seems theres nothing worse on a bike than a head wind.Better get used to it.

Yep. Ultegra SL. Works well, no problems with in at all. Plus I really like the SL finish. It is the best looking Shimano groupo IMHO.

I have had no problems with scratching until recently, but I bought a new show and pedal. The shoe is wide fitting, and rubs off the crank on the right hand side. I am sure this is easily remedied by changing shoe and cleat position.

BTW, I am supposed to be buying a compact Ultegra SL group from Che Guedara. But have been tardy. If you need it, PM him. He has an immaculate one AFAIK.

IMO the worst thing about a turbo is the expectations developed from road cycling. I find outdoors on the bike that time just flies. I often think "I'm nearly home now", which means another hour or two on the bike, but it seems like minutes.

On the turbo (which I sold) every minute seemed like an hour.

I have an idea that I'd use a turbo if I had a posh enough shed, decked out with flat screen TVs, fans and so on. But I think I'm deceiving myself. If the weather is that bad I'd rather just go for a run or take a rest day.

My problem with turbos is very simple.
    (1) Boredom,
    (2) Unnecessary for most cyclist,
    (3) Not a great idea in this country.

We live in a country where rain and wind is a constant, but not extreme.
That is for the most part our conditions during winter (temp apart) are likely to be encountered during the racing season or sportif season for the rest of us.

The temp then rarely gets so bad that it is too cold to go out.
It can be as windy in summer as in winter.

I see benefit in using turbo for certain classes of elite athletes who simply need to fit in a certain amount of training around a job/family. For them it is a necessary evil.

For the rest of us, it is a bizarre and laughable indulgence.

For the same cash you could join a gym, use a gym bike (OK not same as a turbo), and at least ogle at the bikini clad gym babes in the steam room.

Thanks for reply ROK ON. I have an account with CSS so should be able to pick up the crankset for a reasonable price but will keep your contact (Che Guedara)in mind.

You should have come out, we had mighty crack altogether. Well, more crack than you had anyway.

Dirk i got a tacx sirius or as it is now fondly known 'the devil incarnate'. It's probably pretty good as far as they go but godammit it was boring...

Rottenhat you are well hard going out in that! as it turns out I had set my alarm for the wrong 9am so I would have missed ye anyway, doh
