Going to Berlin in December for 5 days. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel? Going with Mum for a girlie break so somewhere central would be good. Also, any must-sees you can recommend on the city itself would be appreciated:)

myself and my boyfriend went to berlin last december for 5nights, we stayed in hotel berlin, booked it through 1800hotels and it worked out at about 30e a night each and you're talking really nice 3-4* german hotel with beautiful breakfast.
i think they have renovated the outside of the hotel recently so perhaps the price has gone up as a result but i'm not sure...
it's in the west of the city in a great location, you can walk to potsdamer platz in about 15mins..and there are s-bahn and u-bahn stations not too far away and a good bus service running by the door (i think it was the 100 but i can't be sure) basically the bus goes to the reichstag among other places...
berlin is a fabulous city with lovely people, great shopping and lovely weinachtsmarkt!
i would highly recommend the checkpoint charlie museum, there is alot of reading in it but it's great, the jewish museum is a must see too..
get a guide book as it will help you greatly but never be afraid to ask anyone for directions, they are so friendly!

Yes, bus 100 and 200 are the tourist routes, taking you past many of the city center attractions.

just saw your request. I was in Berlin last month. I booked an Apartment via web. The Apt was 58m square, with Balcony, and could accommodate 4. Cost was - 50euro per night total. So would be very reasonable. Had everything. Was central just 3 minutes from Nollendorfplatz underground. Lots of restaurants and markets nearby. Also near to KaDeWee - a must for sheer shock at luxury items for sale - It's like Brown Thomas x 20.
So check out - www.nollendorf-apartments.de Also you could check out the - Apartmentsapart.com website - dearer but luxury apartments and excellent service. You'll love the city and the people - so enjoy.

KaDeWee is absolutely amazing! my favourite thing about any department store is the food department and i would go as far to say theirs is better than harrods!

Just back from Berlin after the 'Fall of the Wall' celebrations.Great city.stayed in a Mark Hotel. http://www.markhotels.com/Berlin-Mark-Hotel/Hotelbeschreibung,1.html 5min walk from Zoogarden station. Relaxed athmosphere there. Very reasonably priced. we did the walking tour takes about 3 hours , it's advertised as free, but you're expected to tip the guide, the thinking being that they have to work harder for their pay.

Also as you will be arriving at Schonfeld Airport - a good way to get into city centre is via - Bus just outside arrivals. Ask anyone which goes to the
U-Bahn (Underground) - to Rudlow. Bus takes 10mins. When boarding ask for ticket to include U-Bahn journey. Cost is approx. 2.70e. This allows you to get Bus/Underground to your destination in city.
You should get the 72hour or longer Multi-Pass for transport system. Might be available in Airport - if not, at Main Metro Stations. Cost 20.20Euro, plus map/discounts to main venues.
Another nice place to stay is near to the Spree river. Very pretty with lots of cafes etc. Try also to get out to Potzdam - 30 mins by train. Full of Palaces, history, art, and churches. Plus great Restaurants and huge gardens and park. You'll love place and people are so friendly and helpful.
