When I go to log in to OS X and am prompted for my password, beside my username there is a (3).

    E.G.

    Joe Bloggs (3)
    Enter Password ...................

Is this a cause for concern? Is my macbook infected with something? Before it used to have a (2) after it and I think before that there was nothing. There doesnt seem to be any other issues so I dont think its a virus or something.

Are you sure the number is after your username and not the computer name? I've never heard of this happening with usernames, so I presume you mean the computer name (on the login window, the computer name is right below "Mac OS X" in grey). Perhaps you are using your own name for both.

OS X will add a number to the end of the computer name if there is another computer on the network with the same name. Are there other computers on your network?

Yeah, sorry, it is the computer name. There's an imac and a pc but they aren't the exact same name as my computer??

Thats a worry off my chest anyway. I thought there might have been some sort of spyware.

    Thanks for the response

Maybe it just got confused. Nothing to worry about though. You can change the computer name in System Prefs > Sharing.

Re: viruses/spyware - nothing to worry about either. There really aren't any on the Mac. There are occasional reports of trojans but but they require a user password to do any harm. I've never heard of anyone actually getting one.
