I saw a learner driver car with the l plate up today on the m7 today..I was wondering what would happen if the gardai stopped him..Would he just get a fine or would his license and car be taken away from him

Nothing will happen because this is just one of the numerous traffic regulations that are either under-enforced or not enforced at all. Drive along the M50 any time you like, you'll see numerous L plates on cars, 95% of those the driver is unaccompanied.

May not be breaking any rules, just someone who sometimes accompanies a learner in that car.

if theres an L plate on a car, doesnt mean the driver is a learner. just that someone that uses that car is a learner. could be brother, sister, daughter, son etc

Legally, you're supposed to take down the L-plates if your not an L driver. They definitely enforce that up north, although I've never heard that down here.

That's not correct. There is no legal requirement here for a Licenced driver to remove an L plate.

They enforce it up north because its a UK law! There is nothing, at all, to prevent you having L plates on a car when fully licenced.
