Recovery time after exercise

I play indoor football on a Wednesday night each week and I am well able to run around for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Recently I have started to play on a Thursday night also, but find that the lower part of my legs, just above the ankles, hurts real bad after only a couple of minutes. What's the story there?

Is there anything I can do to help the muscles/joints recover quicker in future?

Pint of skimmed milk after each session will help with recovery times.
