what bikes do the gardai use in Dublin city center? I imagine it would be pretty decent bike if they are handing them out to gardai.

Are you thinking of nicking one, or are you trying to work out whether your getaway bike is faster than theirs?:)

They are quite decent and well designed for job- I believe they use a number of different suppliers but they are basically decent quality hard tail mountain bikes kitted out with rack, mudguards and slick street tyres.

    Here's an example:

It's a BH frame (very reputable Spanish manufacturer, Nicolas Roche rode one in the Tour.) Decent entry level Suntour fork with lockout, solid Mavic wheels, and a Deore/Deore LX drivetrain (very solid and reliable stuff from Shimano.)

I've noticed GOBs using those disposable bottles of water in their cages.

Someone should explain to them the law.

    Got it in one!

No, just considering a hardtail trail bike and they looked like something you could use, and i guessed they would be decent quality so just wondering if something similar would do someone doing a few trails.

I was going to explain it like this (but with a hell of a lot less detail-due to lack of knowledge!!). This pretty well sums them up

Use both BH and giant bikes, giant bikes are far superior to the BH, in my opinion anyway....

IMHO they are sub-standard bikes considering their overall function.
Cops in most major international cities are provided with top of the range machines, which they not only deserve but require to fulfill their duties properly.
In L.A. for example, local shops donate Cannondale and Specialized bikes to their immediate forces.
Also, whenevr I see Gardai cycling around any town or city, they usually appear to be pedalling like the hammers of hell, but ain't actaully going that fast.Seems like a mammoth waste of energy tbh.
I'd have no qualms about out-pacing any one of them single-handedly,but the fact that they can gang up on you means that escape isn't always guaranteed.

Really, what do they need top of the line bikes for ? Something reliable is all they need.

    For chasin' people!

Seoiusly though, I think they should have the very best tools for the job.

i look at the majority of guards and say to myself "how the hell are you ever going to catch a criminal?"

That is absolute crap, they are designed specifically for their function. Are you alleging that in LA the cops are cycling around on Tarmacs? I'd like to see them hop a kerb in hot pursuit...

Incidentally most professional cyclists actually use a much higher cadence than you might think optimal... so "hammers of hell" for you might be typical cadence for a roadie... maybe they teach them this (most cyclists use FAR to slow a cadence.)

This is from the whole police need Ferraris mindset, not actually useful for day to day policing
