i work my girl alone when i hunt her, but she due into heat in November or december i think. she had her last heat in june, although it was only her second heat and she came in for the first time a full eyar before that.

does anyone get that injection on their dogs to stop them coming into heat or do they work them away in heat and keep them clear of other dogs?

    Hi Steve,

I would be very wary of taking her out during heat. While you might be able to take her to a place where there are no other dogs, a bitch in heat can be just as determined to find a dog to mate with than a dog is to find a bitch in heat. I would keep her locked up for the 3 weeks and go with a friend that has a dog for those couple of weeks.
On the other hand you can get an injection for her from the vet to stop her coming into heat. I have never used it myself but do know people who have (even trialing men) without any problems. I would suggest you have a quick chat with your local vet and get the pro's and con's of the injection and make an informed decision based on that.
    Good luck.

A word of caution on that injection, after getting it there is a chance that your bitch wont come into season again ever. The vet is better qualified than me to explain the pros and cons of that injection.

i wouldn't worry about working her while she is in heat. nothing works, hunts or runs like a bitch in heat.

I would think that the increase in your bitches performance would not be worth risking a mating with the farmers sheepdog or some romantic terrier that appears through the ditch with a rose between his teeth and a twinkle in his eye.:D

It's not the twinkle in the eye I'd be worried about!:D

have ye no control over yer dogs? it don't happen that quick and the if you are that worried she will only stand for 4 days so do the dates up and leave her home for them days

My Springer Bitch is in Heat at the moment, I'll leave her at home for a couple of weeks but that doesn't bother me coz I also have a GWP. My problem is the bastard of a mongrel who has been hanging around my back garden. He was standing up on the ditch behind the run during the weekend, so I had a premonition of him leaping into the run to nail the springer. These bloody mongrels are just too bloody cute sometimes. I've had to cover the top of the run with chainlink now to stop him getting in.

Yes the bitch will only stand for a few days. I would still not take the chance. It doesn't happen that quick is right...but if it happens on the other side of a ditch or in the middle of heavy cover it could be too late. If you are happy to 'chance it' then fair enough. I am just giving my opinion that in my case I would not take the risk. The season is long and you will have plenty of time to get out with your dog when her heat cycle is over and you can relax and not have to give the days shooting looking over your shoulder for rosemantic mongrels ;)
