Don’t let dieting make you miserable
Just to let ye know, that for all the eat this don’t eat that brigade that you get in here, here is a true story that needs to be told.
My grandfather passed away last night. Nothing wrong, he was an elderly man of 92. We are not “devastated” as his time had come, and truth be told, he was happy to go. He lived a great life.
But this is what I wanted to say.
Since he was in his 20’s that man ate white bread and only white bread, with loads of butter! Had frys 3 or 4 times a week, Drank full fat milk, ate spuds EVERY day, had 3 sugars in his tea (never drank coffee mind!), smoked 20 major a day, drank about 15 pints a week up to a few years ago. Ate copious amounts of red meat and fried food.
Lived to 92, was never sick, was happy out and died content.

Don’t let the “drink soya and eat Veg” brigade dictate to you. Food Fascists are worse than any sausage sandwich!
Live your life, enjoy it and don’t let you diet make you miserable.

    Thanks

first off, condolences on your loss ...

You have taken issue in a few other posts with people beng over health concious when it comes to diet on boards.ie if you feel like that then you should probably not ask for peoples opinion on your own diet if your not going to like what you hear ... Of course there are worse foods than white bread, butter or spuds but you have to remember that not everybody has the same tolerance for food .. some people can eat crap all day and stay thin and ive to old age but LOTS of people CAN NOT do this ....

I agree with the overall point you are trying to make though i.e. no need to be too extreme with diet ... having said that, do not let some rare cases (like your grand fathers) fool you into thinking there will be no health consequences to eating junk food on a regular basis!

I never understand people who post things like that. So what? He had a poor diet and it did him no harm, so what? Do you think that's the same for everyone? Quite clearly it isn't, so what's your point? Would it be better if everyone took up smoking? Took up drinking 15 pints a week? No? Then again, what's your point?
People come here because it's a place to discuss diet and nutrition, to read interesting debates and maybe learn something. People come here to learn and discuss what works for them and what doesn't. Dismissing a whole forum on the basis of one old man dying is as ridiculous as thinking all anyone says here is 'drink so and eat veg.' My granddad had much the same diet as your granddad, and he smoked woodbines. He died at 54- oh dear, that really blows your fledgling theory out of the water-since we using individuals and not larger numbers of the population to base our wisdom on.

Sorry for your loss. I agree with your point that no one should diet to the extreme of being miserable.Happy medium should be achieved but your story shouldn't be used as a crutch for free reign eating ... my father died going on 60 from heart problems. He smoked, drank and ate nothing but ****e but i don't post this story to 'fear' people into eating better.

On a final note most people(not all) posting here are looking to 1.lose weight or 2.maximise fitness/sporting goals which YOU will find it SO much harder to do eating frys and refined carbs.

Firstly, I echo other people's condolences.

I was actually having this conversation with my mother the other day. We're a long lived family in general, my grandmother ate bread and butter and sucked fox's glacier mints all day long, lived until she was 84 and was vital until her last day.

My Grand-uncle drank a bottle(!) of whiskey every day and smoked a pipe until he died at age 85 and a week before his death was having a debate with me about the existence of god, so his mind didn't degrade one bit.

I'm sure we can all think of someone in our lives that smoked like a chimney and lived to a ripe old age but that doesn't mean smoking doesn't seriously impact your health, some people are just lucky enough to not have it effect them.

Most people are not that lucky however. And when you take a big sample of a population rather than individual examples then you start to see the massive difference that diet and lifestyle does play in health and longevity.

Agreed on the point of being stressed out about it though. You should enjoy life first and foremost. Consistently high rates of cortisol (the stress hormone) has a deeply damaging effect on the body equal to smoking or a bad diet.

Yes we do all know people like your grandad, I lived with my 90 year old granny for 3 months and she thinks I am awkward cos I don't eat wheat. Being a student on a budget if i could eat wheat I would, it's not that I dont like bread etc it's that if I eat it I can't even stand with the horrible knifing pains in my stomach / bowel / back!!

My granny eats 4 slices of white bread a day, potatoes, eats biscuits!!!

What she like many older people don't eat is additives!!!! Also their food was so much better years ago, white bread was just flour, water, yeast, buttermilk, baking powder. Now it's full of preservatives, sugar, salt et al!!!!!

If I was to live on my grandmothers diet for a month I would be in tears with the pain.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE icecream, it's again not by choice that I don't eat dairy - god I miss it and there is fab vanilla in the freezer but I can't NOT won't!!

I do not say to anyone that eating bread is bad but why eat a slice of white bread but eating is a slice of brown is better for you.

Yes there are defo some people who are food nazi's (I lived with one) but let them be that way and if they preach just let it in one ear and out the other, it's not like they stop you eating they only say stuff, if you don't like what you ear then don't heed it!!!!!!

If you ask for advice expect criticism but it's advice, not gospel and you don't have to follow it...

Live would be cheaper and easier if I could eat wheat and dairy!!!
