Yeah, I saw an add for it while watching Sky Anytime, already have Sky Movies so it doesn't affect me.

Another thing, does anybody know if this will work on a Sky box without a card, cause I'm using an old one for free to air.

It's the last weekend in October but I think it only applies to Sky Screen 1

All the good stuff will be moved to the other channels no doubt.

Just seen the advert. Next weekend the 30th and the HD are free too. Don't know if you need the HDpack for this to apply.

From the 30th October for the weekend Sky Movies Screen 1 /Screen 1 HD will be free. You will need a valid viewing card to view it.

    So FTV rather than FTA.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

It was never going to be FTA.

quick question, with the free weekend could you sky plus the movies and then after the weekend watch them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Or record from screen 1 now and watch it next weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,759 ✭✭✭gtg60

I would say it is more likely that you will be able to record the free movies and watch them at a later date.

I would guesstimate this based on the fact that the encryption entitlements would have to be changed for those channels for the weekend to a basic sub as it is far easier to do this than temporarily update new entitlements on everybody else's cards so the movies will be encrypted with the same entitlements that you normally use.

    Make sense?

    It's theoretically sound

Either way, better to record and not work than find out it did work when you didn't record any!

Would be kinda difficult for people who arent subscribed to the movie package.

Anyway Id be interested to know also if the films could be recorded next weekend on to the hdd and then viewed at a later date. I do have a current sky sub but not for the films though.

    No it's not.

You can record off any channel on the EPG. Your subscription will only say if you can watch the recording at that time or not. For example. Record a movie off Screen 1 so it will be on your Sky box and then subscribe at a later date to watch the recording.

    That's what I was asking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I'd imagine that you can certainly record a film next weekend, but will only be anble to view it later if you are subscribed to that channel at that time.

(Based on the fact that I couldn't watch any films I had previously recorded when I dropped the Movies from the sub)

Could be wrong though, but if there's anything THAT worth saving (is there?) then I'd just buy the DVD myself...

Ye better be quick transferring them to dvd so in that case:)

Sounds like something sky would do alright

If you record from screen1 or S1hd now-of course you will be able to watch it during the free weekend.
So if theres something on now thats not on at the weekend,be sure and record it.
You will only be able to watch it during the free weekend though.

I think Kaiser and Black briar are right, it's like anything you record from the premium channels, only will play back once you're subscribed to them. Or, if there's a free weekend.

Does anybody know if you need a HD sub to view the free movies this weekend in HD?

I have a Sky HD box but no HD sub.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I'd say you would but it would be a good chance to advertise the HD product.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 5,532 Mod ✭✭✭✭spockety

Just checked, FAQ on Sky's web site says "All sky customers with a Sky HD box" can get the movies in HD... nothing about a HD sub. Fingers crossed!

I think you might be correct. The 2 channels will be FTV for the weekend and I imagine the content will be broadcast FTV once you have a valid Sky card - it will not be based on your specific subscription. So if you attempt to playback a recording it will be seen by your box as FTV and playback will be authorised.

I could be wrong but it makes sense.

I'll record anything of interest just in case - I'll post the outcome on Monday evening ;)

    From here;
The channel will have twenty movies to view from 6pm on Friday 30th October until 3.40am on the night of Sunday 1st November on Sky channel 311 (and 314 in HD).

Just had a look at the line-up and very disappointed (but not really surprised!) that most of what's on is years old and has been on even terrestrial TV loads of times.

Not really what I'd consider as a good advertisement or incentive to (re)subscribe.... oh well!

I wouldn't be opposed to old movies being shown especially as they will be ad free but with 1,000's of movies out there it is disappointing that Sky do not come to an agreement with movie studios to show more movies. What put me off them years ago was constant repeats. That hasn't changed either. Some movies being shown twice in one day. What's the point when most subscribers have a PVR now.

True... but in fairness to Sky they do show the majority of US/Hollywood films (past and present). Yes you could argue they could show more world cinema, but the reality is your average viewer is only interested in the latest US blockbusters. The real problem is that they've created too many channels in the name of "choice" but at the expense of quality by way of constant repeats.
This then (as you highlighted) puts people off, especially as the subscription charge only continues to go up, and most of the films can be bought for a few euro on DVD or watched on other channels.

Think about it.. when there was just 1 Sky Movies, or even when they added Sky Movies Gold and The Movie Channel, having "the movies" was almost a status symbol and the saturday night premiere was something special and worth paying a premium for - but now they're just another channel in a sea of largely unwatched channels on the EPG.

I remember it well. Sky via analogue satellite was in ways better value than what is there now.
