UPC/Thomson DVR very noisy

I had a UPC dvr installed a couple of weeks ago but it's very noisy, was watching a movie from an external hard drive last night and I had to turn the upc box off because I could hear it over the sound of the tv.

Even on standby it still sounds like the hard drive or fan is constantly running.

Is this the same with all the upc dvr's?

    Thanks,
    Neil.

I had the Thompson one also, it was very noisy. Switched to the new HD PVR which is manufactured by Cisco. Picture quality (even on SD channels) is better and box very quiet.:)

You obviously had to pay for an upgrade to change did you?

I have the standard Thomson DVR and I can't say it's noisy at all unless I literally stick my ear an inch or so away from the box when I can hear the disk and/or fan, but otherwise, at a distance of 2-3m I can't hear a thing.

Mine is fairly noisy, had the tv at low volume last night and had to turn the box off because it could be heard over the tv, same noise on standby.

I'd take a can of compressed air to the fan and any air vents on the unit, fan could be dusty.
Is it kept in an enclosed unit? My own hd box is and is in there with the modem gets like a hot press in there at times which aint healthy for cooling.
Also if you can stick some runners (preferrably rubber ones) under the points where the box contacts with the unit hard surface this will greatly reduce noise, its more than likely the vibration from the hard drive and fan being amplified by the surface.

I doubt it's dusty, it's only two weeks old and was brand new when it was installed. There is no sound from the external hard drive, ps3 or wdtv that's sitting beside the upc box. The unit is not enclosed either, and it already has rubber feet.

Back on topic, should the fan/hd spin all the time even when the unit is on standby?

i dont think so my HD box winds down the drive after about 60 seconds, I'd see if yours stays on and if so call them up

Mine was quite noisy for a couple of days after it was first installed. Then it struck me that it seemed to be some kind of resonance effect off the front card flap cover. So after I just opened and closed it - and pressed to ensure it was firmly seated - it never happened again!* :)

    *that I noticed

I've only had mine for 2 days (the black Thomson one) but I noticed the same thing as Neilw, and my daughter commented on it as well. Hard drive whirring noises, pretty loud. It's quiet at the moment though. We'll see how we get on.

I have the HD Cisco one too (only have it four days). It was very noisy - noticeably so. When you walked into the room, you could hear it humming away if it was on. You know that felt protector stuff that you can stick on the legs of furniture to protect wood / laminate flooring? I had some left over and put it underneath the four contact points of the box. Much better - we can hardly hear it now. If I had rubber ones, like hightower suggested, I'd imagine it would even be better.

I have some of those felt pads, no harm in giving it a try, thanks :)
