So I want to refinish my RG body (any long time members will know how long my RG was for sale on adverts..) and I've been pricing a couple of guys with good work in the States but between shipping and the actually cost it's just too damn expensive.

Can anyone out there recommend someone who would be capable of giving me a swirl without breaking the bank? Something similar to whats in the pics..

    Cheers lads,

    Danny

As I posted in the other thread, Jem swirls aren't done with spray guns. The ones Vai has done are created by dipping the guitar into a bucket of mixed paints, hence why each one is different. The guitar you've pictured here looks like it has a black base coat, with bits of red flung on it it from afar, and then lacquered over it.

Very curious to know what guitar has an 8 string floyd though?

Yeah, apologies for the double post there, something odd happened.

@ Paintdoc that would be an Ibby custom job.. anythings possible when you have the money...! Looks more like an Original edge to me though...

On that note I received an email from the guy at http://www.guitargurullc.com telling me it was in fact a swirl and he would need $475 to replicate the finish. Now I'm not too hung up on appearances and for that kind of bread I'd sooner be the one to take a bucket or a brush or whatever to my axe!

@ Nozebleed I'll give Pat a shout, any idea how good he is? I know the finish won't be identical but I would be after something fairly similar. Not the kind of thing I can afford to throw money at on a chance especially since it's purely visual and isn't going to make me sound any better!

Anyone else got any recommendations from experience?

Actually here's another image of the same finish in an ice blue. Patterns look the same.. an initial coat of black and then some handy sponge work?

The second image show a similar pattern only ina different colour which kinda rules out the paint fleck idea. It's not a swirl either.. whats your diagnosis doc?

The technique could be done many ways, with different implements. Thats what makes those finishes unique. There's on on the blue finish which looks like someone took a branch with leaves and dabbed it on. You'd be surprised how many different things you can use.

Looks like a ragging effect to me paint applied and then partially removed with a cloth.

Caparison guitars all have hand applied finishes so it probably is possible to do a finish like the one you're after with a sponge or something... Get creative and come up with something original!!

Just fishing around for ideas more than anything else, came across that weird red job and became increasingly intrigued with how it was done....

Anyone else got any interesting finishes?

Some great fabric finishes here. Jai is a great guy and does great work on guitars.
