Transmission problem on 92 defender

    Hi all,

Hoping I might be able to pick a few brains here, before handing my landy over to my mechanic.

I was travelling on the motorway cruising at around 70mph when it sounded like something came loose down around the gearbox, it created a kind of rattling sound.

I slowed down to around 30/40mph and dropped down to 4th, 3rd and then 2nd gear.....all seemed ok then.

I then speeded up again and worked up to 5th gear, and got the same noise.

I dropped down to 4th and made the journey home in that gear.

Once I has stopped at a junction, I had lost all drive in all gears, and the rattling sound became more of a crunching and rattling than just a rattle.

I was recovered home, and now can only get drive in 4th gear, and when I select 3rd or 5th get the crucnhing noise again, but not in 1st, 2nd, 4th or reverse.

I have had the cowling off from around the gearstick and there doesnt appear to be anything loose, does this indicate an internal problem.

I have the jeep since feb this year, and the diff lock has only ever worked in the high setting, not low....not sure if this is connected to the current problem?

    Any ideas

    Thanks in advance

Needs a new gearbox by the sounds of it

Probably a collapsed layshaft bearing, new gearbox time I'm afraid. Go to Ashcroft transmissions in the UK if you want a quality replacement.

The difflock is seperate to High/Low but operated by same lever. The difflock is operated by a wobbly selection of levers that needs all its bushes and be properly adjusted to work correctly, many seize through lack of use. Nothing to do with your current problem but you'll have to strip the linkage when you take the boxes out and split them.

I got an Ashcroft recon from this guy lately, at the same money Ashcroft wanted and had no hassle shipping back the old box as I just dropped it off when collecting the new recon box. Give Jon a call.

Btw it is the layshaft bearing front of gearbox which has failed as it was the same symptoms on mine.

Right lads, many thanks for the replys.

My mechanic has informed me its the layshaft bearing, and whilst it can be fixed with replacement parts, he says its gonna be cheaper to fit a replacement gear/transfer box.

I've seen a few on fleabay for between £50 and £150, which doesnt seem to bad if their in good working order, but obviously postage/courier is quite expensive.

I will be in the UK in a few weeks time so could collect one then, but thought I'd ask here to see if anybody has one lying around the place, or maybe you know somebody who does.

I'd like to get it back on the road ASAP really, so if there is one here at reasonable money then thats great :D

Consider the cost of fitting a dodgy gearbox, also remember the gearbox fitted to your truck should be a 56A suffix G or H these were the strongest of the LT77's and if you fit and earlier type (50A) then the layshaft bearings are smaller and the TDi engine will make mincemeat out of one of these , so, putting a cheap unknown gearbox could be costly in the long run, If you are in the Uk then look at this site, http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/category_5.html these are the best in the business.

Thanks very much for your advice twofish101, your above comments will serve me well I'm sure ;)

I'm well aware of ashcroft, but was trying to avoid the expense of dealing with them to be honest......I'm already a few grand over budget with this wagon already, and I've not finished yet :o

I'm sure with a bit of due diligence I can find what I need on fleabay now.

Once again, thanks for the tips on the serial no's of the gearbox.

You could try some of the reputable breakers in the UK like Equicar and CWS, will be cheaper and you'd have more comeback than a cheap ebay one.

Mark, I know of a good gearbox and transferbox but you'll need to be quick...I'll drop you a PM.

id give crozier a bell and go for a recon box from ashcrofts at least you know that what you are getting is going to be good and it will have a warranty ,a secondhand box from someone on line:confused: is a big gamble you don't know what you have until you drive it and if it's got to come out cos it's sh1t your back to square one even if you do get your money back
