Checklist for choosing pup

    Hi All,
Collecting my springer on Sat, as a checklist I have written out a few questions to ask the owner below..... Also just t to mention I am happy with breeder credentials, I visited his premises and it is really clean and really organised and when i went into pen all the puppies were energetic and came running up to me.
My checklist is for picking out the pup

    Docked 2/3 tail left on
Well spaced eyes which are dark and well rounded
    Well formed skull
    Straight legs
    Puppy is confident
once narrowed down I may use sock to see which puppy will naturally retreive

I got this recommendation from a trainer who does presentations for the NARGC so I'm reasonably happy with the quality of the pups but I'm going to ring him before I travel and ask
    Exact perentage of the pups
    Mirco chipped?
    Registered?
Does anyone have anything to add to above

Look for umbilical hernia's. Usually caused by the birch cutting the cord herself. The pup will recover, it's just it will run the risk of getting hernia's later in life easier than a dog that didn't have one to start with.

Ask to see the parents to assess their character.
Take them out one by one on their own to see do the wilt when the don't have all their buddies with em...
Obviously wormed & vaccinated if old enough.
    Have they papers yet etc
    You've alot covered already...

I'm no expert on these things but just back from the vet last night where he had a student in with him and he went through all the checks he does out loud.

Alertness good full eye colour no cloudyness
Ears clean of wax build up etc
    No hind jew claws
No umbilical hernia's as per Mallards post
    Teeth healthy and complete
    Coat clean and wet nose...

When I got my lad I let the pups play out together and tried to look for a pup who stood out from the crowd. I suppose being curious and adventurous is a good trait to look for. Good luck! ;)

well you know what to look out for health wise. as for character and trainability you don't want a headstrong stuburn dog or a shy timid dog either. if the breeder will allow you make a loud bang and watch out for the pups that run away from you but recover fairly quickly and come back with tails wagging. incase anyone runs with this by a loud noise i mean a clap of hands or a shout not a shotgun
