Are they big enough to sell out that place? Personally, I couldn't justify paying that much for them, don't know them enough.

DMB have a HUGE fanbase.More so in the states though.

Tickets are a tad much alright.

i dont think they'd sell out here. im only 18 though and only one person i know likes them, maybe they're more popular amongst other generations but i do think that DMB is an american thing as opposed to an age thing. either way im there!!!

Got my tickets on o2 blueroom presale anyway. Saw them in the point before, it didn't sell out that time but I wasn't taking any chances. Phenomenal live band and I've been a fan for years. But yeah, they're not nearly as big here as they are in the States.

Yeah sorry, I just meant here. Know they are huge elsewhere, but O2 huge...unlikely.

Can't wait for this! Had tickets to see them in England earlier this year but couldn't go. Glad they're playing Ireland.

I've been a fan of theirs since '97 (when I first heard their music while on J1) and I saw them in the Point the last time, it was a good gig but I felt the atmosphere was a tad pedestrian. Perhaps I was expecting too much, that's the problem of listening to a lot of their well produced much hyped live albums.

I saw them supporting Springsteen in London in June. Their sound is fantastic, but the extending jamming just isn't for me. I know that's part and parcel of the band, but I really could've done without most of it, given that the songs themselves were usually good.

It will be the 4th time ive seen them. One of the best live acts ive ever seen.

anyone see them a few years back doing the acoustic gig in the boxing arena? flippi awesome

The only advice I would give you is to try and listen to a bit of their music before you go for it. I went the last time in the Point and didnt really get into it at all.

That was just Dave and Tim Reynolds, excellent as they are I prefer to see the full band, you must see Carter Beauford behind those drums! Fantastic drummer.

I would agree with this, they have a massive back catalogue and it would be worth checking out their latest set lists because they could pick anything really.

Yep, they really like to jam and drift off form a song into some unknown jam, which I think goes down well with the following in the States but perhaps the crowd over here not so much.

I'm going to see them in March, have heard good things about them too. Only ever seen a few clips of them live on youtube and (i think) Hard Rock Calling in London last year, and they look pretty good live.

I've seen some peoples comments regarding listening to some of their stuff before going to the gig, and I've had a look online and they seem to have a huge back catalogue.

Anyone out there got any suggestions on which albums would be 'essential' or a good place to start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭ninwilky

The best of whats around album is the closest thing you'll get to a best of. one studio cd and 1 cd of live tracks.

They are not on the same planet as Springsteen. Went to them on their last tour and listened to some albums beforehand. myself and my mates all concurred that they were very underwhelming. Maybe it was us but I thought it was a very uninspiring gig.

As I said before I would try and listen to quite a bit of their stuff before spending hard earned money on them.

Does anyone know the name of the track in the radio ad for the DMB gig?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭Slasher

    Found it!!

The track is called Ants Marching. Saw it on Youtube - and there was me thinking that interweb thing would never take off.

Oddly enough, the track is not available on Itunes, but is on Ovi.

Going to the gig tomorrow, but don't know much of their stuff I'm afraid.
Meant to brush up on their material the last few weeks but never did, going to have to do some cramming now tonight...:pac:

Anyone know what time they're scheduled to be on stage? Usually the MCD website is helpful for this type of info but it doesn't say anything specific this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,521 ✭✭✭Shred

This will be my third time to see DMB (saw Dave on his own acoustically in Birmingham '06 too) and it's gonna take an awful lot to live up to the gig in Brixton Academy last June; that was truly gobsmackingly unreal and has since been released on DVD. Someone mentioned that they couldn't get into the Point gig in 2007 - well I found the crowd to be particularly boring at that one and that's the difference with the gig last June -the atmosphere - the crowd were as up for it as the band (it doesn't really come across on the DVD tbh).

As fas as I am aware the band are due on stage at 8.05pm; one of my mates was at the O2 gig in London last Saturday and they came on at that time.

BTW, in my opinion the 3 best DMB albums are Before These Crowded Streets, Busted Stuff/Big whiskey and the Grux Grux King (it's a toss up between the last two for 2nd place tbh) - in that order. But they're all great.

Oh another thing - the point was fairly full in '07 too (pretty close to a sellout I'd say) which was a big surprise for me as most people I talk to have never heard of DMB.
Having said that I spoke with a Scotish bloke in London last year who had come over to Dublin for the gig and fans (myself and friends included) do generally seem to travel to see them no matter where they play as they play an almost totally different show every night (even if they play the same songs - which they don't tend to do- they'll jam them differently).

Let's hope the crowd is more up for it tonight, I'll be there wearing my BW&TGGK shirt!

DMB fan, looking forward to gig tonight. Would agree that prices are a bit much considering they didn't sell out last time and considering their smaller fan base here, got tickets from a tout for less than half price last time. Anybody know anything about their support band, will there be more than one? Anyone got a better eta for when DMB will go onstage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭surfjunky

I'm betting they won't be onstage till 9:15

They came on at 8.20pm and played for about 2h 20m without a break and finally finished at around 23.05- brilliant, brilliant gig. Took a little while for the crowd to get going (and fill up) - I'd say there was about 8-9,000 there in total. Great set, started with Bartender which I've never had the privilege of hearing live before and it just got better & better from there. Great version of Gravedigger, The Stone was always one of my favourite tunes and it was great tonight (even without the beautiful Quartet at the end). I think that was also the first time (at least that I can recollect) that I've heard All Along the Watchtower with the full band and it was amazing, got the crowd rocking before they went off for the first encore and everyone kept screaming for more until Dave came back on a few minutes later. Great gig, still buzzing & won't sleep for a while yet!

Oh how could I forget, Shake Me Like A Monkey was fecking brilliant again, man I love that song but it works so so well live - love that tight brass section.

I was offered a free ticket for this last night and I've not heard one DMB song at all.

I have to say that I was really blown away by them. Unbelievable musicians.

I liked their cover of All Along The Watchtower too. Very very good.

Did anyone else find that Dave's mic wasn't loud enough or was it just me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,463 ✭✭✭run_Forrest_run

god I'm gutted I couldn't get to this gig. I was at their previous outing in the old Point but from what I'm hearing it sounds like they played a more popular well known set this time. Bartender is a great song and good to open with (tired of them opening with Don't drink the Water').
2 hours 20 mins is a good set time, compared to most bands these days who do an hour and a half.
Tell me, did Carter do any of his solos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,521 ✭✭✭Shred

He knocked a few out alright, but sure he kinda solos through some songs as it is! Oh and the total set was about 2h 45m with the encores! In regards to Dave's Mic - he does tend to mumble a little at times, or are you talking about during tunes 'cos I didn't find that myself?

so true, he may play the same song differently many times...a genius of a percussionist.

What an amazing gig, I'm still reeling and tripping (billies)! :pac:

The setlist was brilliant too, completely different to the London gig on Saturday. I cannot believe they played The Stone!

Ah, it's alive! Yeah man, Tripping Billies was amazing too. You can totally understand why people travel to see several shows on a tour or follow them during their summer tours of the states every year, what a buzz that'd be.

Oh I'd just like to mention that I caught the last couple of songs by the support act Alberta Cross, the last song- ATX - was really cool, will have to check them out properly.

Hell, I'd follow them all across Europe if I was rolling in it...

Funny how it took them a decade to get to Europe (with Dave just testing the waters with those three gigs in 06) but I hope they'll keep up this touring tempo now!

I'd say they will. Sure they can re-invent such classics such as Tripping Billies and Crash into Me on a whole new audience. They are a great band, and their Big Whiskey album displayed another side to them proving that they are capable to 'heavy it up' whenever they want.

Yeah, I've been a fan of theirs for a few months now, since I knew they'd be opening for DMB I gave them a listen. Really love the song Lucy Rider.

If anyone wants the full setlist for the night, it's here: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dave-matthews-band/2010/the-o2-dublin-ireland-23d4b467.html

am a big fan of DMB since 1996...been to a couple of shows and have all their live and studio albums as well as their live DVDs...

the show at the o2 was great as the venue and the sound was really nice esp for the sound that DMB can produce..

the setlist was fine apart from that they played lots of songs from the Grux album as they have been doing for the last year..

I was hoping they would play #41 and two steps...

the bad thing was that most of the ppl didnt know the songs and there was part of the songs were the crowd was supposed to sing after that like in Ants marching and the stone and nobody around me was singing except me...cuz this is now supposed to be the biggest live and jam band in the states for the last 5-8 yrs...

Is there anyone who has pictures from the DMB concert? I didn't know it is allowed to take pics during the concert so I left mine at home.
Please if you have any pics from this gig send it to me!

    I'd appreciate it!

    Thanks
