Right heard this crowd being advertised on the radio and said I would check it out. Put in my car 1.4 Golf as they had no TSI option just left it at a regular golf but they quoted 255.41. Rang a main VW dealer and their quote was 180 for a 30K service

I go to a main dealer mostly out of convenience to get mine done as I depend on being mobile. Full service is €280 and a minor one about half that. They quoted me €240 for a full service in the Ford garage directly across the road from the Seat one

I just messed around on this site and think the prices aren't too extortionate. I just checked my two cars (Focus and Fiesta) and both are returning full service price's of around €230 - €240. When you look at whats included I think the price is pretty competitive.

Its a step in the right direction anyway, some people like the convenience of being able to book a service in on line etc and knowing what the exact cost will be in advance.

What is covered in each of the services that everyone is quoting numbers for - are they all doing the same thing?

have to agree put in getting a timing belt done on skoda octavia 1.9 diesel and got a price of just under 370 which is the best i have got to date.

Will be interesting to see if the garage try to lump on any extras

Seen a Ford dealer on the Naas rd advertising €180 for a standard service on a Diesel Mondeo, Can't remember what it was for the smaller engines but I think it was €20 cheaper.

Every main dealer will add extras. I worked in one for a few years as a Service Advisor & you've no idea of the hidin extras on bills. Although, you've no idea of the cost of running a high standard workshop. Still, a main dealer service history does wonders for some cars.

For a full service, timing belt kit and clutch replacement on my Integra I got € 1,276.43 as a price for a garage in Meath.

I have already priced the parts myself and in the process of purchasing them.

Full service with oil filter, oil replacement, and front and rear brake pads cost me €100 (already done)

    Upgraded air filter costing €140
    Upgraded spark plugs costing €50

Will fit them myself so no labour.

    Timing belt kit €307 (Honda)
Exedy Stage one clutch kit €220

so thats €817 for parts (albeit with an expensive filter) and only the service labour and filter/plugs labour included.

I've been quoted €400 to do a gearbox recondition(not including part) and put the clutch in and have yet to get a price for the timing belt.

So all in all € 1,276.43 seems like a very good price although it would depend on what quality of parts they intend to use

What's in that kit? Did you ask for everything in it, or did you just ask for the kit?

what all needs to be done in a service?

i just got the oil, oil filter and air filter changed for 95quid there a while back. he asked if i wanted to do the plugs and i said no. it's a timing chain on the car so not much point in changing that too regular either.

Oil, Oil filter, air filter, Spark plugs (depending on milage).
Then any good mechanic will have a look at the brakes and check the lights on your car (not focus them rather check they work), they will also lift the wiper blades to see are they worn.

(95 excluding plugs seems a grand price)

I do my own servicing (father and brother are mechanics)
    Honda Integra Type R

    Hamp oil filter €6
Castrol Oil €Free but would be 24 euro for 5 Litres
Spark Plugs €40 for NGK Iridium (60,000km plugs)
Air Filter is a spoon one so it gets cleaned with a kit that costs €15 every 10,000km

To be honest there is nothing in servicing a car, it takes 20mins to have it started back up again. I'd recommend anyone to do it themselves.

    - Make sure car is warm, turn off engine, apply Handbrake and jack up car.
    - Pull dipstick out of car
    - Get a small basin that can hold 4-5litres of fluid and put under sump nut.
    - Get a cloth and a socket & ratchet and open the sump nut, its the lowest one on the car, on the opposite side of gearbox. allow oil to drain out.
    - while the oil is draining out take off the spark plug cover with the appropriate screwdriver/socket.
    - Remove the spark plug leads. Get a thin socket (the size is usually 17mm) and an extension. Drop this into the chamber and loosen plug by turning anti-clockwise
    - Take out sparkplug and check the head of it, this will give good indication of how healthy car is. A white tip means the car is running nomal/lean, a really black/sooty tip means the car is running very rich.
    - Get the new spark plug and gently drop into the chamber, hand tighten the spark plug by turning clockwise. Do not over tighten, the heads of many cars are made from aluminium and you will strip the threads.
    - Do this for all plugs and replace plug leads good and tight. Replace spark plug cover.
    - By now all the oil should have drained out of the car, Remove the Oil filter, usually located either at the front or back of the block. Best get a cloth for this to help you turn it as they can become welded on with the heat. Careful when removing it as its full of oil. Drain this into your basin.
    - Dip your finger into a little of the used oil and rub this about the thread and rubber of the new oil filter, then place on the car.
    - The thread on these filters is usually quite long so keep going until its hand tight. Make sure you do not over tighten but make sure its not loose by any means.
    - Get under car, remove basin and tighten the sump nut. Some cars have a collapsable sump washer, you will get this with your oil filter. if so place this on and tighten.
    - Drop the car down so that is level. open the airbox and replace the panel filter, these tend to only fit the right way in so you wont have to worry about messing it up. Close air filter and tighten.

    - Next, fill in about 3.5- 4 litres of oil. Start the car till the oil light goes out and leave to settle, Wipe the dipstick, put in. Check the marker and see if the oil is near the top notch/marker on the bottom of the dipstick. If not place in more oil. Remember cold oil will take sometime to settle to the bottom of the engine so give it a few mins between each check. While your waiting you could check your lights etc.
    - A tip for filling the oil is to turn the oil drum to the side so that when your filling, air can get back into the drum and ensure a smooth pour, otherwise it will come out in large glugs and more than likely spill. Always wipe up any spills as this gets messy when the engine gets warm, it will also inhibit you from noticing any oil leaks down the line.
    - Always make sure the oil is just at the top notch, never over fill as this will case more damage to your engine than underfilling will. If you have over filled, loosen the sump nut and leave some drain out.

ok booked car on tuesday to get timing belt done today. got confirmation email and text on tuesday and then got reminder text last night about getting the belt done turned up at garage this maoring at 10am and.........

hey presto the service seems to work!!! had my name car reg and everything ready to go. so next thing will be to see if anything is added on to price!!!

As i said was 360 for timing belt, tensioners and water pump. you pay a 10 immediately to the site and the balance to garage. was defo the best price i was quoted.

will let you know when i collect car

A step in the right direction alright but as previous posters mentioned regards timing belt services the cheaper prices that are being charged could possibly not be very comphensive for all recommended parts to be changed. It would be madness not to change the tensioners or water pump on a Passat for instance considering that the majority of the labour cost is to strip the front of the car to access the belt.

Also some cars require specific oil types e.g the 1.9 Tdi PD VAG lump....the long life stuff (VW 507.00) costs roughly 15euro a litre! so considering the sump holds roughly 4.5 litres that 75 euro for oil alone. Id be curious to know would garages not familar with certain cars fill the sump with the correct oil.

do you have to register on the site , i have tried to book a service in my local garage but unsure if the service is logged with them !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭racso1975

Your selected service includes the following:
    For: Volkswagen, Passat, 1.9 Diesel, 2005, @ 70,000km

You have chosen to book a Timing Belt Kit Replacement
The following work will be carried out on your vehicle:

Remove and install Timing Belt and Water Pump (where necessary) all appropriate Tensioner Pulleys and Belts associated with it. Each Timing Belt Kit includes; Timing Belt, associated Belts (where necessary), Water Pump (where necessary) and Tensioner pulleys (where necessary).

All service books will be filled out and stamped.
Please drop your car off by 10am on your chosen date and collect after 4pm on the same day.

    Total cost = € 436.98
    Cost of selected service = € 385
    Vat @13.5% = € 51.98

you have to register after you book the location. not all garages are reistered. It asks you county first and then gives the locations with in that county that are available

well picked the car up at 4.30 after getting a phone call. Got there and car was washed and hoover'd as well as a bulb that was gone being replaced. Small touch's but nice all the same and not a penny extra

A 30,000 mile service for a 1.4 golf only includes an oil change, oil filter and a pollen filter if its fitted. So me thinks this is equivalent to the small service on mycarservice.ie, which i imagine is alot cheaper than the 180 you were quoted at that garage.

Just looked checked how much it'd be to service my car there. A 2001 Volvo s40.

    €296 for a full service.
€710 for a full service and a timing belt change!!!
€1260 for a full service, timeing belt and clutch!!

Now i dont know if the one where the clutch would have to be changed is extortionate as i dont know how much a clutch on my car costs to replace but €420 to change a timing belt seems fairly outrageous to me.
