Over the last 24hrs iv become very sick, rang my doctor this morning and he told me that i more than likely have swine flu and that i should stay at home from work for at least 7 days.

Im only working in the place about a month and dont really want to call in sick for that long, Is there anyway of confirming i have swine flu as my GP said its SUSPECTED swine flu! Ill defo need 2 or 3 days off but 7 seems a bit much!

If you ring your employer and tell him you have swine flu, they'll be battening down the hatches to make sure you DON'T come into work. They doesn't want an office full of sick people on their hands, I'm sure. Stay at home with your germs! Swine flu or no, infecting others is really not cool.

Could you maybe get a doctor-on-call to come out and have a look at you? Telling you over the phone to take a week off work because he suspects you might have swine flu seems really drastic. Although if it is swine flu, do take the time off work. Even if you're feeling better 4 or 5 days in, you could still pass it on to others

If you have swine flu, the recommendation is to stay away from people if at all possible - that includes doctors. Whether it's "just" a bad flu or actual swine flu he needs to stay home until he's better. He can get a doctor's note, yeah it'll look bad, but he's sick. It's ok to stay off work when you're sick.

7 days from today will bring you up to next Monday... no big deal to take the rest of the week off since you are genuinely ill.

elling you over the phone to take a week off work because he suspects you might have swine flu seems really drastic.

Myself and my girlfriend caught (suspected) swine flu in August and we were told the same. Once you have a high temperature, sudden onset and two or more of the seven symptoms, they baton down the hatches. The only reason they even sent a Doc on Call to me is because I have the dreaded "underlying condition".

The only way of confirming it is by a swab and lab test and they don't do that for many people. OP, I know it's a pain in the ass and the boredom is something serious but for all our sakes, stay the hell away from work :D

I think that at the moment, there would be too much demand on laboratories to test each and every case for swine flu, so diagnoses over the phone will have to do.

Stay at home and do what you are told by your GP. If you go out before you are well, you run the risk of infecting more people. Get friends/family to drop off food and DVDs etc to keep you entertained and fed.

Relax and enjoy your days off work - once you're better that is. A lot of people are going to contract this flu yet, so you won't be the only person away from work.

They've stopped swabbing people and sending off samples to labs altogether at this stage.

I had swine flu and the doctor made me take 10 days off (although I do have an underlying condition), same as you it was an over the phone diagnosis. Ring your doc back and ask can he write you a note for work and get someone to pick it up.
Any job that kicks up a fuss because you caught swine flu are eejits. It's doing the rounds. Chances are they'll tell you to stay away and rest up. It would be irresponsible of you to go back in when you still have symptoms and risk infecting everyone else. Also you don't want to end up with exhaustion afterwards by going back to work too fast.
