    Hi everyone,

I'm wondering what would a reasonable salary expectation in the current climate.

Say whatever the surveys are on job sites less whatever % would probably be reasonable given the jobs market at the moment and the economic outlook.

So anyone any ideas on what an average salary would have come down by or am I looking at this all wrong?

Depends on the sector, and a persons experience and skillset. Some sectors which had suffered massive falls (such as IT) are actually rising in some disciplines (such as SQL Server admin etc) whereas its a safe bet that service sector jobs etc are falling.

Salaries in the private sector have not fallen noticeably- according to the ESRI- and falls in the public sector thus far are by means of various levies.

Starting salaries in new jobs- have taken a dive- primarily because its an employers market- and other than in highly specialised professions- there are a queue of people more than capable applying for any given job.

ok well the job is tech support with development required and it requires strong SQL skills.

I'm not working at moment though so personally I was just thinking of dropping below the average because I can easily survive on it and it will be move than I'm making at the moment :P

It is a temporary position on a month to month basis so he wanted to know what salary I'd want per month which kind of threw me as I've only ever worked in permanant positions before so don't think in monthly earnings when thinking of salaries.

You mean contracting? Be sure to take into account your costs such as health insurance and income tax if it is.

I know quite a few people in lower to mid-level roles whose salaries are down by about 10 grand because of the recession.

I'm in a similar boat myself to the OP trying to negotiate a decent salary for a tech support job. What the employer wants to pay me is less than what I would make filling potholes for the council. It makes me wonder why I ever bothered going to college.

Tech support doesn't pay- there is always going to be a constant flow of cannon fodder queuing up to this sort of work- so personnel can pretty much pay what they want to.......

Thanks I was offered the role with a salary at the lower end of the contracting range but still on current salary scale. As I have a couple of years experience, I think I'm pretty happy with it so I've accepted the position.

Thanks to everyone here for their help in both threads I created as it was very nice to get reassurance that I was doing the right things and I feel silly having to talk to friends about things I sometimes think I should already know :D
