One mans view of playing at the IPO!

    Having played in this years IPO event(s) at the Regency I'd like to firstly congratulate the organisers on an excellent weekend of poker activity.

    I was lucky enough to finish 2nd & 9th in 2 of the 'side' events winning just over €3700 for my efforts. I would however like to make the following observations as regards some aspects of the events in the hope that some things could be made a little bit better for the players in future events.

    Firstly it was good to see that the organisers took on board a point I made some weeks ago about the the side event 'chip rebuys' being made more generous. Rather that the 3k + 2k that was originally the plan it was a much better 3k + 4k however the extra chips in play were not taken into account when the issue of level times came to be thought about. I'll explain more in a mo...

    As I spent most of my time in the side-events I'd like to make the following observations :

    - Organisation of the seat allocation was a little pooey. Having to stand around the hall ways waiting for seat allocation was poor. This was brought about mainly by being on the alternates list, as I was for the two events I played in, and I would have like to have seen this handled better.

    - Too many breaks! The main event had breaks every 4 levels (160 mins) The side events had a 15 min break every 3 or 4 levels of 25 mins. Whilst it might be appreciated by some it meant that the tournaments seemed to go on forever. Which brings me to my next point....

    - Levels too long! The 25 min levels, in the side events, were probably 5 mins too long for the chips in play. A 15 min break every 6 levels of 20 mins would have been much better with the tournaments themselves taking 2 hours less on average. Whilst the Sunday afternoon event (1pm start) might be okay with a 25-30 min levels the later timed tournaments (6pm / 7pm start) needed a faster structure.

    - Double Chance - Yes or No? Whilst it sounds a great idea its not really! I'd have prefered the whole stack being in front of you the whole time but thats just a preference I have.

    - Freezeout or Rebuy ? IMO its always better to have a freezeout event. The €50 + €50 events generated almost a 100% rebuy rate so why not make it a €100 freezeout to start with?

    - The unwanted levels! The Sunday evening event (round of each) had a 25 - 25 level at the start. What was that all about? A wasted 25 mins!!

    - Clock 'wind backs'. Whats all that about? If you have a structure then stick to it. The idea of 'play that level again' is a nonsence!

    Of course these may seem like minor gripes and they are.

    The dealers were excellent, the waitresses excellent, facilities excellent, food served was ok!

    To finish with I'd like to suggest to the organisers the following side-events for next year...

    Fri - 7pm. €100+reg No Limit Hold'Em Freeze. Capped at 200. 20 minute levels throughout. 10k starting stack.

    Sat - 7pm. €100+reg No Limit Hold'Em Freeze. Capped at 200. 20 minute levels throughout. 10k starting stack.

    Sun - 1pm. €100+reg No Limit Hold'Em Freeze. Capped at 300. 30 minute levels throughout. 10k starting stack.

    Sun - 4pm. €100+reg Omaha Freeze. Capped at 100. 20 minute levels throughout. 10k starting stack.

    Sun - 6pm. €100+reg Round of each. Capped at 100. 20 minute levels throughout. 8k starting stack.

    So there you go...just some of MY thoughts on the past weekend and any comments are welcome!

    Hi Ukpoker , congrats on your results.... just want to comment on a couple of your points:

    Levels too long! The 25 min levels, in the side events, were probably 5 mins too long for the chips in play
    does this not make it a better structured game? If they address the breaks as you have recommended then this would help with the overall timing of the game!

    Freezeout or Rebuy ? IMO its always better to have a freezeout event. The €50 + €50 events generated almost a 100% rebuy rate so why not make it a €100 freezeout to start with?
    Personally, I agree, I much prefere the 'freezout' game but I think what the organisers are trying to do is add a bit of variety to their games. This was the first time I have played the Boyles event, and, to be honest, I never really understood what the hype for a €200 event was.... but I do now. The atmosphere was top notch, the Boyle Sports pro's.... Marty, Padraig and Scott where brilliant as representitives (well done Boyles for not only getting great players but very down to earth interactive guy's) mixing with the punters and I think their side events reflects very well on the whole unique feel of the festival

    Clock 'wind backs'. Whats all that about? If you have a structure then stick to it. The idea of 'play that level again' is a nonsence!
    I assume, rightly or wrongly (did not play any side events) that a repeat level was requested by the players to stop the game turning into a 'crap shoot'.... If this was the case I would applaud the TD for listening to general consensus (obviously not everybody!) and having the initiative to make it a proper and skillful game of poker

    just my tupence worth....... congratulations on your wins again

    Pooey?

    England = "pooey"

    America = "not the standard we are accustomed to.. let me speak to the manager"

    Ireland = "It was Grand!"

    UKPoker are you for real.

    It sounds like you should be playing bingo.

    extra levels and longer blinds allow every stack to have more play in them. I don't know what you are used to but in Ireland we like some value.

    Breaks are always a good idea. if they arn't why do poker stars have one every 60 mins.

    It was a great event and the blinds and chips in the side event were not long enough or enough chips.

    you crazy dude.
