Please help Audi A4 Gearbox

    Please can someone help
My Audi A4 auto gear box stoped working transmission lights all started flashing and lost drive.
Was told it needed a new gear box €7000 plus (it a 03)
Got second a second opinion was told the chain in the gear box had broken and it may need a new computer in the gear box. If it did need a new computer the total cost would be €4400 and it would take 10 to 14 days.
At day 10 I was told it did need a new computer and it would be another 10 days.
After the 10 days were up I was then told the computer seems to be missing between here and Germany.
He now has my car over 3 weeks and is getting very upset with me when I call to find out how long it will be
"I will call you when the UK gets back to me"
When I ask how long this could be he just says he does not know.

I don't know what to do, say or ask I have had no car for a month now.

Can anyone shed some light for me as my I don't want to piss him off if this is normal but I really need my car and I can't afford to rent a car and make care payments for a car that is not working and pay 4400 to get it fixed

Thats what I taught but I was told that would be around the same price and the gear box computer would still have to be replaced as they are coded to the car and you can't just move them from car to car

You're car is barely worth that! Where did you bring the car?

It is uneconomical to spend €4,400 on repairing an almost 7 year old A4 imo. Dead money you will never get back OP.

I know!!!! the only trouble is I still owed the bank loan and I couldn't find a car for 4,000 I only drive auto. I was in a catch 22 the car is worth 5K with a gear box I owe 4K and I only had 4K to spend. I need a car that can do large miles l live 60 miles from my job.

Pull your car out of the garage and get it brought here, VW/Audi/Mercedes main dealers use these guys for all their auto gearbox work.

Calling around the best prices I got were in the north and this guy I got from Audi NI.
What do I do now? Do I just tell him to keep it? my head is spinning.
It seems like since I moved back to Ireland every time I get any work done I get ripped off or taken for a ride.

Are you saying a main Audi dealer in NI quoted you those prices? Are you saying the quotes you got from ROI Audi main dealers were even worse than that?

Either way, 7k for any kind of repair on your car is a stupid quote. Someone is trying to fleece you. Please come back here and tell us more. Best not mention the actual name of the mechanic / dealer you were dealing with though...

7k was the IR price from a main dealer.
€4400 (£4,000) is the NI price not a main dealer but the main dealer gave me his number. The price does include time belt £150 fitted this was €480 from main dealer in Dublin area.

We had an A4 1.9Tdi Multitronic blow it's box last year.
    http://www.southsidegearbox.ie/contactUs.html
fixed it for €3,000 + VAT and it was running perfectly after that.

What exactly goes wrong with them ?even 3k sounds like a huge repair bill.
