I find that website mywheels.ie very good. In fact I had a brainwave, I took out a book called "No Lovelier Cork", published a few years ago and went through each page that featured cars, lorries, buses etc. All the pictures were taken before the early 1970s. I typed in every single car numberplate into the site and every single number doesnt exist. Amazing,:) but sad :(

not surprising really is it. only a tiny proportion of irish vehicles from that period survive. There are very few left indeed, maybe someone should produce a list of vehicles that can be proved to be original Irish vehicles , say pre 87.

I do something similar. When I see programmes from the RTE archive from the 70s and 80s and also Reeling in the Years, I often take down the regs and check them. I don't think I've found a single car with a current tax disc. Many are not on the system at all (i.e. were likely scrapped before 1993)

Even much newer cars are mostly gone. I bet if you entered in a load of 1996 or 1997 regs at random, you'd find that large majority of them don't have a current tax disc either. And these vehicles were never subject to a gov. scrappage scheme so its just natural wastage really.
