Excellent calibre, only a necked down .30/06 anyway. It will kill anything on these islands, I sold my trusty Mauser mod.77 .30/06 to buy a Carl Gustaf .270 in 1993 when the ceiling was lifted from .22cfs.
Test group was a ragged hole at 100yds with the Norma factory 150gr cartridge.
    I re-load with 130/140gr bullets and it is still a one-holer at 100yds.

I intend on having a .270 by this time next year. Lots of power and shoots flat. What more could you want?

Re-loads in the .270 Carl Gustaf, two or three clicks to the left needed for the 100yd center zero.

we had one 30,06 and two 270s in the party this week .i can honestly say the 270 using 130gr federal B tips put the stags down quicker than the 30,06 using 180gr nosler partitions.

No, but I have done some good shooting with the Hornady 140gr Spitzer Boat-tails in my re-loads, [ bullet Ref. No.2735. ]
The Speer Boat-tail Softpoint Ref. No. 1458 is also a cracker.

You are making me and many others sick talking about reloading, we are still waiting for any kind of direction on this issue here.
It would be a wonderful thing to be able to tailor a load for your particular rifle but we are still in the dark ages here as regards to reloading.

was trying to talk a mate of mine into getting a .270 what is the recoil like, I shoot a .308 and consider that to have a very soft push actually lighter than certin loads in a shot gun

Recoil's not bad at all. Nothing like the horror stories you hear some people describing it as.

Depends on the firearm really, mostly to do with stock design.

i was looking a .270 today and the fella in the shop told me to stay well clear of them! said there like shooting black powder rifles, and the rounds are far to dear for them!

But you will pick up one in very good condition for very reasonable money. the dealers are full of them since ceiling was raised on calibers

He's taking out of his A### IMHO:)

At any rate your really only going to pull the once so recoil or smoke? should'nt be an issue.

Absolutely. Once the stock fits, nothing'll hurt you. If it doesn't, everything will suck.

Talking through his arse to be honest. It's a great round, fast, flat, good ballistics, and with a great selection of ammo, which doesn't cost any more than any other typical hunting round, and less than some. There might be muzzle flash if you're shooting at night, but it's not really a dedicated foxing calibre, so you won't be too bothered. The recoil is largely a thing of myth, and they certainly don't smoke. Methinks your dealer needs to clean his barrel. I'm sure the golden pages could drum up a chimney sweep for him. I've bought a .25-06, which is comparable to a .270 and had I not found a good deal on it, I'd have bought a .270, and doubt I'd have had any regrets.

i he was ranting on about the muzzel flash and that it kicks like a horse! i told him i wanted it for deer shooting and that i would most likley only be taking one shot so i didn't care about the flash! he went on about the .308 been cheaper for reloading and that! plus he also didn't have a .270 in stock!

i have shot a 270 for 15 years and found it one of the best cals for deer , fox and boar when the laws relaxed i got a 308 as well but its use both for everything i have shot fallow ,sika, hybrids, roe in england red in scotland ,boar in a few countrys moose, reason i got it is heavier bullet weights for the later animals i did have a 22.250 before the 270 again good round if things changed again i would stick with my custom h&s 270

there's your answer he didn't have what you wanted but he wanted you to buy what he had, if you were looking for a .308 and all he had were .270's then according to him the 308's would be crap

Was reading the article jw referenced in work this evening. Not a bad read. It really is such a versatile calibre. I've never found it kicky, personally, and it's got a great trajectory and a good range of useful bullet weights. If it's suitable for what you're looking to do, it's a great calibre to be in the market for, as there are so many of them sold second-hand by people who didn't like it for whatever reason, many of them in excellent nick. I think it's a great round, personally. You need to sort through the bull a dealer will feed you as well. Most will tell you anything to try and have money on the counter before you leave the shop.
