I've always dismissed the guy as a soft fool, but even I have to admit thats the first smart thing I've heard coming from a politician.
I'm sick of the government telling regular people that WE have to keep taking cuts when they don't.
I'm still not voting Fine Gael, but fair play, he deserves credit for the statement, (regardless of his intention to carry it out in the long term)

    I'm, quite frankly, shocked.

The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said his party in government would abolish the Seanad and cut the number of TDs.
He also called for pay cuts for the Taoiseach and his ministers.
Mr Kenny was speaking at Fine Gael's annual president's dinner in Citywest in Dublin.

The abolishment of the Seanad was suggested in the McCarthy Report (or if you're used to RTE's retarded term: An Bord Snip Nua). It's not a brainwave by Enda Kenny.

I personally think the Seanad is a waste of time. It's a joke, just more politicians lining their pockets. It has very little real power and it's functions are dubious. The real debating is done in the Dáil. The ministers should of course take another large paycut - and tell the public about it. This would atleast keep some public faith in the government.

im gonna copy and paste a post i made about this over there somewhere --->

In its current form the Seanad is pointless to be quite honest. It should be reformed tho, not abolished.

I think, it should have as much of a say in blocking/amending legislation etc etc as the Dail and there should be no Government Appointees. It should be directly elected, half way through the Dail term, so that if the Public is as unhappy with the government as if is now for example, we would be due a Seanad election around now and the opposition could be in contol of the Upper house and block stupid bills.

You're kidding right? Debate? In the Dail?

With the current whip system in place the govt. can do whatever the hell it likes. A bill is introduced, then it goes off to committee - god knows what happens in there for all the coverage committees get - and then when it comes back the govt. just uses it's leverage to shove the bill through. TD's who have supposedly left the govt. parties still vote with the whip!

If the opposition try to do their job and oppose legislation they're accused of 'playing politics.' Funny that, I thought that was supposed to be their job.

As limited as the Senate is at least they can slow down legislation and throw it back at the Dail when necessary.

I'm all for reform of the Senate but we really need to reform the Dail first.

    Riv

It is so important to have an upper house in place to make sure the lower house works as intended. The fact that our Senate does not have sufficient powers to allow for this does not necessarily mean it should be abolished, but rather reformed in my view.

Also, really - is this the best Enda can come up with? It will save €150 million a year according to Enda, fair enough every little helps . . . but that really is a piss in the ocean compared to our deficit. Will he be willing to implement the required major spending cuts, rather than just taking the cheap snipe shots?

Anyway, this would require a referendum. Not sure if I can see it being passed, knowing how conservative we are. Is it worth spending the money on?
