numb foot syndrome

My only inclining would be that you are tightening your shoes too much, it can sometimes be a problem if the pedals have a high outside plate causing discomfort(or holes in your shoes which I learned the hard way) but this time it cant really be...

Do you wear skate shoes much? They are very heavily padded and have a large sole, you might have them too tight... Maybe in the XC your pedaling position causes the sole to dig up into your shin...?

I wear skate shoes just about all the time, either Vans or Airwalks. And like most skate shoes they are not tight, I slip them on instead of tying each time. That said they are not too loose that my foot is sliding about on the sole, which is dangerous for cycling anyhow.
The shoes themselves have a near perfect sole, very little wear on the actual thread.
I know what you mean by digging into my shins, but they don't ride up that high. And its more the sole/toes that go numb, as in the top part of my foot would be fine.

    Hmm, I'm baffled..
Skate shoes are normally great...(I own one pair of shoes that arent skate shoes, clipless shoes haha)
Maybe try wearing another pair of shoes when you go out riding next time...
The only other thing I can think of is your foot positioning on the pedal itself... Its not a problem for me since I use clips and straps...
